Sarah Walters, the narrator of GIRLS IN TRUCKS, is a reluctant Camellia Society debutante. She has always felt ill-fitted to the rococo ways of Southern womanhood and family, and is anxious to shake the bonds of her youth. Still, she follows the traditional path laid out for her. This is Charleston, and in this beautiful, dark, segregated town, established rules and manners mean everything. But as Sarah grows older, she finds that her Camellia lessons fail her, particularly as she goes to college, moves North, and navigates love and life in New York. There, Sarah and her group of displaced deb sisters try to define themselves within the realities of modern life. Heartbreak, addiction, disappointing jobs and death fail to live up to the hazy, happy future promised to them by their Camellia mothers and sisters. When some unexpected bumps in the road--an unplanned birth, a family death--lead Sarah back home, she's forced to take another long look at the fading empire of her youth. It takes a strange turn of events to finally ground Sarah enough to make some serious choices. And only then does she realize that as much as she tried to deny it, where she comes from will always affect where she ends up. The motto of her girlhood cotillion society, "Once a Camellia, always a Camellia," may turn out to have more wisdom and pull to it than she ever could have guessed.

I so hate stories of stupid girls. Beautiful cover and blurb made me think this was going to be a delightful rebel daughter story. It wasn't. In fact parts of it were downright creepy. Main character was unlikable. Just a dumb privileged girl making stupid decisions over and over. By the end of the book she wasn't any better; but now she has a daughter of her own to screw up. 🤦‍♀️ #shouldhavebailed #stupidgirls #coverletdown

What I want to do? Sit here with a umbrella drink and a poolside read. What I'm gonna do? Host a pool party for my family. 🏖 #lastofsummer #idratherbereading #labordayweekend

$10.71 was the whopping total for these goodies at the Goodwill store. I would like to point out that I restrained myself. There were so many more calling to me....📣🎵🎤🎶

We read this for book group and everyone disliked it. One of the reasons was that the main character was totally unlikeable. I find if I don't like anyone in a book, I have a hard time liking the book as a whole. Anyone else? #aprilbookshowers #unlikeablecharacters

readinginthedark It depends on whether or not they still fascinate me, I guess. Although, even in books where I dislike the main characters, I usually want one or two side characters to love. 8y
TrishB Agreed! I just don't want to read if they are all horrible! 8y
TheKidUpstairs I find it depends on whether they are supposed to be likeable. If they clearly are dosed to be likeable, and I don't like them then I'm out. But if they're supposed to be unlikeable then I can deal. But yes, I usually need at least one character around who I find relatable. 8y

[DELETED] 853593837 Depends on what kind of dislikeable. If the character's backstory explains it then I can like a dislikeable character. If they're annoying for sake of being annoying then chances are I'll dislike the book too. I am however more likely to hate a book if I find I don't care or grow to care for the character. 8y
drokka I don't have to like any of the characters, provided that at least one of them has a redeemable quality. Something I can grab and hold close. 8y
Lindy Unlikeable characters can be very interesting. I'm always curious about the motivations of people who aren't like me, so as long as the characters are believable, I don't need to like them. 8y
Daisey I tend to have a hard time with a book if I don't like any of the characters. I have to have someone to root for in order to enjoy the time spent reading. However, I am getting a little bit better about finding other aspects of the book to appreciate even when I dislike most of the characters. 8y

I really disliked this book. In fact, my book group was unanimous in its dislike. I don't think we were the only ones. Look at that rating. But the quote was pretty good! 😁#BookLive17 #bestlineinabadbook

CocoReads I don't remember liking it either. 8y

Coming up in my #TBR pile. I got this on a huge library haul recently.

Em_Shotwell Just finished this book and honestly I don't know how I feel. It kind of had a "girls guide to hunting and fishing" feel to it---although it's been ten years since I read girls guide so I could be off. It was very well written. The author is obviously talented. I'm just unsure of my feelings for the story itself (which is my own subjective view- not a reflection on the actual writing). I need to process it. Review to come. ? 8y
