The Bridges of Madison County
The Bridges of Madison County | Robert James Waller
If you've ever experienced the one true love of your life, a love that for some reason could never be, you will understand why readers all over the world were so moved by this small, unknown first novel that they made it a publishing phenomenon and #1 bestseller. The story of Robert Kincaid, the photographer and free spirit searching for the covered bridges of Madison County, and Francesca Johnson, the farm wife waiting for the fulfillment of a girlhood dream, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY gives voice to the longings of men and women everywhere-and shows us what it is to love and be loved so intensely that life is never the same again.

A photographer shooting covered bridges in Iowa meets a farmer's wife whose family is away for a week and they fall for each other.

I read this in the mid 1990s but have no memory of it. It did not strike any emotional chords and in fact I found myself wondering at times what some of the purpler passages actually meant. It's obviously a favourite of the woman who chose it for our book club and uniting truth and tact is going to be difficult.

Ruthiella Good luck! 👍 2mo

I‘m surprised how much I enjoyed this. My heart hurt for the two characters but also I was happy for them and what little time they did have. It took some adjustment for me due to it being an affair, and I was a bit surprised how accepting I was of it. The quietness of the love is what I think did it for me. In a world where 99% of the romance books are just thinly veiled smut, it was refreshing.

This was my #BookSpin for March.

TheLudicReader I read this 30 years ago and I bawled like a baby. 7mo

(1992) This was the bestselling book in the U.S. in 1992. Back in 1992 I worked the service desk of a public library and set a goal to read everything on the Bestseller list. No fan of romance, I liked it better than expected: I liked its direct language, attention to detail, and its brevity. This time around I like it less -- its excessive sentimentalism makes my eyes roll -- but still think it's a pretty good example of the kind of thing it is

Lordt. I was ranting about this book to my husband and he said the movie was good. 🙄🤣 Well, yeah, Eastwood‘s in it. The dialogue was obnoxious (“My God, your power” Girl, no.) if I read that he was “a leopard that rode in on a comet” ONE MORE TIME. The author 100% wrote himself as the main male character. She looked down her nose at the Iowans (all they want out of life is to farm and raise families. Okay? And?) I get it. Shes lonely. 👇🏻

AshleyHoss820 Life didn‘t quite turn out how she wanted it. It is really sad when you get cornered by your choices and no one should feel trapped. I really, REALLY wanted to like this one. I really did. I just felt their 4-day love affair pushed my boundaries of disbelief too far. 10mo
Clare-Dragonfly “A leopard that rode in on a comet” definitely seems like a description you should only use once 😂 10mo
AshleyHoss820 @Clare-Dragonfly Also, the overuse of “I‘m the last cowboy” or “I‘m the last of my evolutionary branch.” I get it. You think you‘re cool. 🙄😂 10mo

This one totally blew my socks off 💨🧦
I really did not like the two MC's because of their actions, or the first half or so of the story.(Imo they were both glutton for punishment.) However, this author had me sucked in and completely emotionally invested by the end. It was just so, so atmospheric and well written that it was impossible not to be. Thank you so much @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for sending this to me. ❤

I had just finished watching the movie and thought, “The book has to be better.” I checked it out from an online library and wasn‘t disappointed. It‘s a poetic, touching read that should make you weep at least twice. No movie can do this book justice. It must be read.

Still thinking about this one after my “so-so” review yesterday; I dislike it more the more I think about it so switched to “pan”. Mostly I think the author manipulated the audience to support bad behavior and failed to support the ‘love story‘ which is really just an affair without any context before it or resolution after.

I left more complete thoughts on Goodreads. I know my thoughts are unpopular, but I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER getting them out.

KristenDuck I haven‘t read this one but I know that feeling of when most people love a book and you‘re left feeling like “what am I missing??” 6y
intothehallofbooks @KristenDuck That‘s EXACTLY what I‘m feeling!! So many people on my Goodreads feed have this at 5 stars which is okay. I‘ve read some stories with affairs in them that were very good. But the author made some creative choices here that I just hated. And I could not suspend my disbelief either. Litsy doesn‘t give me enough space to give details but it just didn‘t work for me. But it did for so many others. I‘m the odd one here! 6y
