“it was not any ordinary sandwich where meat is slapped between slices of tasteless white American bread. This bread was dark and thick baked by an Italian mother in Brooklyn... Petey said, yo, teacher, that‘s my sandwich you et. Class told him, Shaddap. Can‘t you see the teacher is eating?... My students smiled til they saw the principal‘s face framed in the door window. Bushy black eyebrows halfway up his forehead shaped a question.”

Buechersuechtling Oh yes, I remember I liked this one when I read it, which is years ago. 5y
DefLeppard Really enjoyed this series of books and some of the stuff his brother wrote. 😊 5y
LinesUponAPage @DefLeppard I didn‘t know his brother wrote books. I‘ll have to check them out. Thanks. (edited) 5y

LinesUponAPage @Buechersuechtling thanks. I‘ve never read it until now. I did enjoy Angela‘s Ashes which I think would be so hard to write being so close to his mother. 5y
DefLeppard Yes his brother Malachy has done a few, the one I read a little while ago was "A monk swimming." Totally different writing style to Frank, Malachy is more upbeat, happy go lucky and a "Jack the lad" type of character. 5y
Buechersuechtling @DeffLeppard Oh, me neither. But good to know. Thanks for letting us know. Like @Lifeisasnap I‘ll check them out. 5y
lynneamch Absolutely LOVED this on audio. 5y
LinesUponAPage @lynneamch I‘m curious, who was the narrator?? 5y

#NoFemmeber #NonFictionNovember #SchoolinLife 🤓Two memoirs which highlight the value of education and the joy of learning/teaching 🍎 I fell in love with Frank McCourt earlier this year when I read Angela‘s Ashes. Tagged book is book three of his life story...his 30 year teaching career. I wish I had an opportunity to sit in his classroom #Inspired and Educated is unputdownable. A remarkable story of resilience. I recommend both books❣️

Megabooks Nice choices! I enjoyed Educated, but it wasn‘t in my top of the year. I‘ve never read McCourt. Maybe as a new to me in #booked2019 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
TrishB Loved Education. Always a sucker for a value of education story! 6y

McCourt's prose is a little tough to follow at times, leaning periodically toward stream-of-consciousness as he tells stories of his teaching career. He mocks himself frequently, blending sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, stories of the students and adults he encounters as he navigates his way through the world of educational pedagogy and philosophy.

In the high school classroom you are a drill sergeant, a rabbi, a shoulder to cry on, a disciplinarian, a singer, a low-level scholar, a clerk, a referee, a clown, a counselor, a dress-code enforcer, a conductor, an apologist, a philosopher, a collaborator, a tap dancer, a politician, a therapist, a fool, a traffic cop, a priest, a mother-father-brother-sister-uncle-aunt, a bookkeeper, a critic, a psychologist, the last straw.

I don‘t read a lot of memoirs. I own even fewer. I guess I prefer to ponder questions about life though fiction.

This was my first book by Frank McCourt, and I liked it very much. His writing is very engaging, and I can see why his students loved to hear his stories, as he explains in the book. I was able to relate to the author as he explained how he sometimes felt like he didn‘t know what he was doing as a teacher. He feared some higher authority coming in and labeling him a sham. As a teacher, I have this fear at times.

JazzFeathers I have never read McCourt, but hears ago l had the pleasure to hear him speaking at a book festival. He was such a fantastic storyteller 😍 7y

After reading half of this book, I let it collect dust on my bedside table for 6 months. I‘m glad I picked it back up, although it wasn‘t extraordinary. McCourt isn‘t much of a role model for teachers, but he redeems himself through this honest account. Rising teachers will relate to his inner dialogue and fear of failure. I‘ll admit it‘s refreshing to read about a teacher who‘s less than perfect for once. Since when does their story get told?

On a day that made me feel frustrated, powerless, and invisible, I'm reminded I'm blessed to work with young people. In the face of so many circumstances that I cannot change, I will embrace the opportunities I have each day to do the things I can: I will talk them about the world they want to make. I will invite them to consider the world complexly. I will give them chances to experience the power of their own voices. #iamapublicschoolteacher

McCourt writes very honestly about feelings of inadequacy, wondering how to get a handle on the job & expecting to be fired for being a fraud. His methods were unusual, but he was able to connect with kids & get their attention. The writing flows, sometimes almost in stream of consciousness as McCourt relates incidents, anecdotes, thoughts & feelings. Just pulled me in and I became unaware of time passing. The end came all too soon.

PICK if you are a teacher or a rising teacher. You will connect to his story in many levels. It is well written and it will keep you reading as you will need to find out the method to his madness. HOWEVER, I dislike him. He is a lousy teacher and he just got lucky - and unlucky. He just made me want to throw the book against the wall many times.

Found this used yesterday. This completes the collection in my library. I paid a whopping $11 total for all three. They're going to be in my TBR queue for a while because I'm so behind, but I'm happy to have the whole trio nonetheless. #tbr #frankmccourt #memoir #secondhand #usedbooks

Have you read Angela's Ashes and enjoyed Frank McCourt's humor and heart? This memoir is about his adult life, as an English teacher--the good and the bad experiences. #septphotochallenge
