A Poem for Peter
A Poem for Peter: The Story of Ezra Jack Keats and the Creation of The Snowy Day | Andrea Davis Pinkney
17 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
A celebration of the extraordinary life of Ezra Jack Keats, creator of The Snowy Day. The story of The Snowy Day begins more than one hundred years ago, when Ezra Jack Keats was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. The family were struggling Polish immigrants, and despite Keatss obvious talent, his father worried that Ezras dream of being an artist was an unrealistic one. But Ezra was determined. By high school he was winning prizes and scholarships. Later, jobs followed with the WPA and Marvel comics. But it was many years before Keatss greatest dream was realized and he had the opportunity to write and illustrate his own book. For more than two decades, Ezra had kept pinned to his wall a series of photographs of an adorable African American child. In Keatss hands, the boy morphed into Peter, a boy in a red snowsuit, out enjoying the pristine snow; the book became The Snowy Day, winner of the Caldecott Medal, the first mainstream book to feature an African American child. It was also the first of many books featuring Peter and the children of his and Keatss neighborhood. Andrea Davis Pinkneys lyrical narrative tells the inspiring story of a boy who pursued a dream, and who, in turn, inspired generations of other dreamers. From the Hardcover edition.

I loved this book! It tells the story of the author Ezra Jack Keats. His parents were Polish immigrants who settled in Brooklyn. Jacob (Jack) was born in 1916. A moving story of his desire to be an artist. He loved a series of photos from Life magazine of a charming brown skinned child. Twenty years later, he used the images to inspire his drawings for “The Snowy Day”.

5feet.of.fury I assumed that author was Black this whole time and I probably read The Snowy Day to 115 preschoolers 155 times each 😅 I don‘t know why but that blows my mind that he‘s Polish. 2y
DivineDiana @5feet.of.fury And he is Jewish. I hope you can read the book. It will give you an appreciation of him, not only as a writer and artist, but as a human being. 2y

AshleyHoss820 Snowy Day is one of my absolute favorite books! I love the story behind it, as well! I‘m thinking of making copies of the illustrations (I don‘t think I could tear pages out of a book) and using them as decorations! 🧡 2y
DivineDiana @AshleyHoss820 I could not tear out book pages either. There are some prints available on Etsy! Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/906837126/the-snowy-day-ezra-jack-keats?ref=share_v... 2y

1. I usually take mine down after New Years. However, I leave a few Christmas mugs in circulation.

2. If I don't have to scoop it or go out in it (except to play), I'd say snow. But in reality a gentle rain is soothing.

Through poetry the author tells the biography of Ezra Jack Keats, author of The Snowy Day and many other popular picture books. Well written with awesome illustrations and an inspirational story. This is one of my five star reads for the year.

I love how this is a biography in poem form. Occasionally kids can find biographies boring and lengthy and this allows it to be more fun

A poem for Peter by Andrea David Pinkney illustrated by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher is a B picture book. In this poem book you‘ll learn about perseverance and Keats dreams. The book talks about his dreams and how it would get deferred before he could try to pursue them. I think this would be good for AS. farynantenucci I really like the resource you attached and this book seems very unique! I‘ll have to check it out soon. 7y

An affectionate, fitting tribute, written in verse. It captures the feel of Keats's books perfectly, and tells this fascinating story in a unique way. And the art is completely amazing. It is an homage to the subjects, both Peter and Keats.

Haven received The Snowy Day in December as her free Imagination Library book and that was also when I learned about A Poem for Peter, the story of the author and his inspiration for Peter written in lovely prose. I was thrilled to find this on the new bookshelf at our local library at the beginning of January.
An excellent read for children and adults!

Earlier this week we had our first and possibly only snow this year. I read Snowy Day to some die-hard storytime fans and was reminded again of its brilliance.
This is the story of its creator and how his life led him to illustrate his first picture book with an African-American boy, revolutionizing children's literature. It was just a story about a boy and snow in the city, but it turned a historical page and launched the career of Mr Keats.

angrylilasian I love The Snowy Day! I will definitely have to pick this one up. 8y
DebinHawaii That's awesome. I loved The Snowy Day growing up and didn't know about this one. 📚❤️ 8y
celtichik I believe I read that Amazon prime has added the Snowy Day cartoon adaptation to its line up. This and Corduroy were my early childhood favorites. 8y
BookInMyHands @celtichik Nice! I hope they keep the feel of Keats' cityscapes. I also loved, loved, loved Corduroy growing up. It's the first story I remember with a non-white character. 8y
