Book of Etta
Book of Etta | Meg Elison
In the gripping sequel to the Philip K. Dick Award-winning novel The Book of the Unnamed Midwife, one woman undertakes a desperate journey to rescue the future.Etta comes from Nowhere, a village of survivors of the great plague that wiped away the world that was. In the world that is, women are scarce and childbearing is dangerous yet desperately necessary for humankind s future. Mothers and midwives are sacred, but Etta has a different calling. As a scavenger. Loyal to the village but living on her own terms, Etta roams the desolate territory beyond: salvaging useful relics of the ruined past and braving the threat of brutal slave traders, who are seeking women and girls to sell and subjugate. When slavers seize those she loves, Etta vows to release and avenge them. But her mission will lead her to the stronghold of the Lion a tyrant who dominates the innocent with terror and violence. There, with no allies and few weapons besides her wits and will, she will risk both body and spirit not only to save lives but also to liberate a new world s destiny."

This took me a month to finish. I just didn't find it as interesting as The Book Of The Unnamed Midwife. Maybe Book 3 will be better? All I really know is I won't start Book 3 for a while. I need a pallete cleanser before trying again. 😕 #MarvelousMarch

It is that time of year again. As a homemaker I don't have much to offer other than my signature. My husband and our accountant are working out a whole crypto situation and I sit here reading, so happy to have the Kindle app because I left my paperwhite sitting on the table next to "my" chair.

What I Loved: Etta‘s struggle with who she really is.
How I Felt: This book wasn‘t as gritty and great as the first, but it is still a great read.
Read or Not Read: Book 2 in a series, so go to Book 1 first!
Small tribes of people survive after an epidemic. Birth rates are poor. Men outnumber women. Etta is a scavenger and encounters The Lion, stealing women and makes a choice to stop the Lion at all costs.

Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 5y

These are the 2nd and 3rd books in 'The road to nowhere' series. I liked them but not as much as the 1st book, 'The book of the unnamed midwife'.
They brought up a lot of different ideas about gender in a world surviving and evolving after being wiped out by a deadly plague. The story and characters needed work they felt under developed.

This entire series is incredible. I usually plan my library days every two weeks, but for this I actually put it on hold and made a special trip. I'm not transgender, but I feel very much that I relate to Etta. He feels forced to be not himself when he's around his community, and I think that's a difficult feeling. Highly recommend all three books.

Soo sooo sooo good! I have been flying thru this series. Two books in 6 days is fast for me and a sign that these books are FABULOUS! Etta/Eddy is a strong character and I was routing for her the entire book! In a world where things are hard and cruel she goes above and beyond to do what‘s right. This book shows differences in all kinds of people that leaves you with an open mind. I‘m headed to get the third before I go away this weekend!

This came in sooner than I thought it would and I‘m so stoked! I flew thru the first book in 3 days and can‘t wait to see what journey this book is going to lead me on! Unlike the first book where the main character was a midwife, Etta is a scavenger who tries to save the lives of women and children who have been taken by brutal slave traders after the great plague that wiped away the world of almost all women and children! Can‘t wait! #SeriesRead

riversong153 @squirrelbrain the second one is definitely different but I think it stands up and is really good so far. I think people may think it‘s less good because going through the tragic events that happened to shift the world seems more interesting than already living in the new world that has been created as a result of what happened. 6y

The sequel to The Book of the Unnamed Midwife, this book begins 100+ years after the first book. Elison has had to do post-apocalyptic world building for this, which I love. Etta lives in Nowhere, a town founded by the Unnamed Midwife, who is revered. Etta is a raider/scavenger—she must disguise herself as a man, since there is continued problems with pregnancy and birth, and surviving girls are unusual. A good read.

#NuYear This is book two from The Book of the Unnamed MidWife series...it‘s set in the near future where women are a scarce “commodity.” Etta is a #warrior she roams the desolate land searching & rescuing relics of the past and braving the threat of brutal slave traders, who are capturing women and girls to sell and subjugate. This could be read as a stand alone, but I enjoyed book one more. Book three is in the works 🧝🏼‍♀️🧝🏼‍♀️🧝🏼‍♀️

🎧 I started this one 2 weeks ago and I‘ve been ghosting it since. Listening to it feels like a chore through no fault of the narrator. I just find the pace sluggish and the writing a bit turgid. It‘s time to move on to something more promising. Why did I get it in the first place when I thought ‘The Book of the Unnamed Midwife‘ was just “So-So?” #Blameitonaudiblesales

🎧 Next up: Sequel to ‘The Book of the Unnamed Midwife‘, IIRC this story is set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by “the Women‘s disease” which kills child-bearing women and their newborns. This is from the POV of a character readers meet in the first “Road to Nowhere” book and the audiobook is narrated by Adenrele Ojo.

TrishB A good read 👍 7y
MaureenMc And apparently it takes place in St. Louis? 7y
Dogearedcopy @MaureenMc Yes, though in this future world, place names have become derivative, so “Saint Louis” is now “STL.” Contextual clues like the arch help the reader recognize the locations. 7y

This book takes place 100 years after the first in a city called Nowhere which treats the diary of the midwife as their bible. Etta dresses like a man (Eddy) when she goes outside the city to raid as it is still dangerous to be a woman on the road with the threat of slavers. She meets people very different from herself, changing her perception of the way of life created since the collapse of the "old world".

As book number two of a trilogy it's a pick ~ as a stand alone, it's a so-so. I found this story less captivating than book one, and the writing was not on par. Etta's story was bleak and the story had some underlying messages, which felt forced. I'm curious if book three will wrap things up. Overall a pick and I'm looking forward to the final installment.

TrishB Agreed 😀 hoping it all comes together in the last one! 8y
Reviewsbylola I rarely ever continue on in series. I don't know why. So if I eventually get to Unnamed Midwife I may skip this one. 8y

#RockinMay Day 30?My latest read is definitely a #WildWorld woman are rare, a valuable commodity...Men hunt and enslave them, keeping them as future "breeders". In Book two, our heroine is a slave raider...freeing woman and girls & slaying their captors. So far this book is dark and bleak. I'm riveted but not fully smitten like I was with book one ~ Book of the Unnamed Midwife. ?"But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware" ?

DebinHawaii It does sound like quite the wild world. I think I have the first book on my TBR list but you have me want to move it up. 👍 And of course I now can't stop singing Cat Stevens to myself & Max so thanks for that! 😬😬😬🙀😾😿 8y

How good was this!! Exciting, insightful, and stark. Gender issues also feature strongly in this, in different ways - not just the precarious existence of the women where they are by and large seen as commodities or brood mares. Not a book for the faint hearted as there is some quite unpleasant stuff in here, but even so, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Bring on the Book of Flora!!
