The Slanted Life of Emily Dickinson
The Slanted Life of Emily Dickinson: America's Favorite Recluse Just Got a Life! | Rosanna Bruno
13 posts | 6 read | 21 to read
Emily Dickinson said: Tell all the truth, but tell it slant. Artist Rosanna Bruno does just as the poet asked in a series of several dozen witty, hand-drawn cartoons inspired by what we know--and dont know--about Dickinsons life and work. The Slanted Life of Emily Dickinson explores--often hilariously, and always respectfully--the myth surrounding the reclusive poet using her own words to skew, or slant, a story that is already somewhat fuzzy in detail. Beginning with a line or two from Dickinsons poems or letters, Rosanna Bruno presents an image of a real or imagined event. For example, she imagines Dickinsons Facebook page (Relationship Status: Its Complicated), her OkCupid dating profile (I am small, like the wren; and my hair is bold, like the chestnut burr), her senior yearbook page (Girl Most Likely to Talk to Birds), and several other hilarious scenes and fictional artifacts. The result is a wickedly funny portrait of one of the most beloved (and mythologized) poets in the American canon.

What a delight this book is! Bruno uses lines from Dickinson's poems and letters but imagines them in the context of reality TV and social media. She also makes up some funny, almost believable academic studies (e.g.Her Daily Bread: Dickinson's Silent Struggle with Gluten Intolerance.)
The perfect read after a jam-packed busy weekend away and long drive home with kids, when life as a recluse holds some appeal. 😀
Thanks @WanderingBookaneer

vivastory Did you have a nice weekend? 7y
merelybookish @vivastory yes! It was loads of fun. Got to see lots of people and kids saw their friends. It was NON-stop. (To quote Hamilton. 😃)So we are all pretty exhausted. I miss my life in KC but not the humidity! 7y
merelybookish @vivastory Thanks for asking! :) 7y

vivastory @merelybookish This is the hottest it has been in KC all summer (as I'm sure you were told repeatedly) 7y
merelybookish @vivastory Well it was good to have a reason for wanting to leave. Temps reached 106 in Western KS on the drive home. 😮 7y
merelybookish @vivastory went to New bar/restaurant in old OP that served and excellent avocado BLT. Called Burg & Barrel. I bet they have good burgers. 7y
TrishB Like the sound of that 👍 7y
vivastory @merelybookish I will definitely check out that restaurant. Ever since Blanc burgers closed there's been a shortage of good burger restaurants 7y

Mehso-so

Although Emily Dickinson was a recluse, the author uses lines from her poems to imagine her life, her thoughts, even her social media presence. There were some funny moments, but mostly this was just okay. I'm not a big fan of her poetry, so would be interested to hear what a fan of hers thinks of the book. This book comes out March 7. It is a Read Now on NetGalley.

WhatDeeReads Huge fan of hers. I'm very interested in reading that when it releases. 8y
Suzze @Lucky_Ladee Oh, good! I'll be watching for your impression. 8y
