Tomie (Complete Deluxe)
Tomie (Complete Deluxe) | Junji Ito
The complete classic horror series, now available in a single deluxe volume. Murdered again and again, one girl always comes back for more... Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye. She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. But soon they realize that no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.

I already forgot to post my #HyggehourReadathon picture, but I DID take this amazing photo of my reading buddy, Huxley, while I was reading. It was a stressful evening, so I appreciated being able to decompress with my pal. Sigh.

I struggled at first with Tomie. The chapters felt so disjointed and unrelated, I found it difficult to grasp whether there was an ongoing narrative I was missing. Once I accepted the nature of its structure, I came to love Tomie. Deeply unsettling, this collection continually finds new ways to unnerve and surprise its readers, and I was loath to turn the final page. 5/5

This is a story about a mysterious girl that attracts violence and creates various horrors, sometimes even unwittingly.

It's filled with grotesque imagery and it's creepy.

I think the only real issue I had with this book is that it gets a bit repetitive at times.

Still made for a fun read but I can't see myself returning to it.

Sweetkokoro Tomie is so repetitive, it drove me crazy when I was reading it. I was expecting something mind blowing with how the manga horror communy hypes it up but it was so underwhelming, and i read a lot of manga but never really touched Junji until recently but overall I find his storytelling lacks. The art is top notch if you can handle the gore and grotesque. 3y
phantomx I did feel parts are repetitive in Tomie. I've read a lot of Junji Ito's works, so I wonder why Tomie has more of a hype than Uzumaki and his short stories collections. My favorite short story is Tomio The Red Turtle neck. There are other horror mangakas you might enjoy, and they touch on different shades of horror 3y

cruelty is cool. sirens are dope. themes of obsession and madness are best. her being genuinely vain adds a touch of depth. fun concept gets boring.

the installments are repetitive instead of building upon one another. his images of body horror and her homewrecker fashion of torturing people are entertaining, but halfway through i wanted to see what other writers are doing with tomie. because she has to have fan fiction.

3.5 stars

Tomie was book 144 and I've completed my Goodreads challenge. Is it too early to start thinking about 2018 goals?

I've done the GR challenge for 7 years and I'm just not sure I want to in 2018.

Laura317 I've done it the last two years. I'll probably do it just to see totals, but I don't get stressed over it if I don't make it. 7y

Cinfhen Wow!!! Impressive!!!! 7y
Erin7 I don't think it's too early. I recently started setting my goals for 2018 also. Congrats on making your goal. My only issue with the GR goals is that page count is not taken into consideration. Still though it's been fun simply as a tool to get me reading more. I like to set a challenge for myself each year of genres, authors, etc that I would like to focus on. It keeps things interesting you know. 7y
ErikasMindfulShelf 🎉🎉👏🏻👏🏻 7y
tif I've found the book Riot Read Harder Challenge really wonderful this year. It's only 24 prompts but it really gets you exploring outside the books you normally read. 7y
OrangeMooseReads Not too early at all. I‘ve started thinking about 2018 reading lists. 7y
AmyG Amazing!!! I never even make my challenge on Goodreads. 😳 7y
robinb Congratulations!!! 🎉🍾🎊 7y
MoniqueReads305 Never too early. I've already started with my 2018 reading plans and have even started creating a bullet journal to write down plans. 7y
Jas16 🙌🏽 7y
AmandaL 🎉 Only if it makes you happy. 7y
LeahBergen I know what you mean! I may just set myself a "page count" goal for next year and not worry about the total number of books read. 7y
minkyb That sounds interesting @LeahBergen 7y
Andrew65 I have tended to use a page and book count. 7y
Sace @Laura317 normally I can shrug off not meeting a goal. Now that I've done it for so long, I find it hard not to stress. 😂 Though I'm pretty good about starting small and adjusting as I go. 7y
Sace @Erin7 exactly! In addition to the number of books, I do try to look at my stats and read more pages each year. 7y
Sace @irre thank you! 7y
Sace @tif I've sort of been doing that this year? I combined popsugar and read harder.... But I haven't focused on it as much as I should. 7y
Sace @AmyG I only make it because I start so small and raise my goal throughout the year. 😂 7y
Sace @OrangeMooseReads @MoniqueReads305 im definitely thinking about goals and bujo pages! 7y
Sace @robinb @Jas16 thank you! 7y
Sace @AmandaL that's the hard part. I'm not sure. 😂 7y
Sace @LeahBergen @minkyb @Andrew65 library thing also shows my average book length. Right now it's 255 pages and I'd really like to get that number up next year. 7y
robinb I have never really noticed page count but have noticed that I veer toward books that are 300+ pages. I think I have this weird notion that a good story can‘t be told in less than that?! 🤔 And yes, I know that‘s TOTALLY wrong. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
Sace @robinb and during the last few years of the challenge I've mainly gone for short and quick because I was thinking more along the lines of total number of books. I think that's why I want to try to focus more on pages read. I wish that was an option on Goodreads. I know a still could...but no badge 😂 7y
robinb @RestlessFickleBookSlut and I don‘t even pay attention to badges/Awards. I did enter the Goodreads challenge for the first time this year, but that‘s the only “competition” I‘ve ever done. 🤣🤣 7y
tracy.anne8 Congratulations!🎉 7y
Sace @robinb I definitely compete with myself every year! 7y

I have to say this was my favorite of the three horror #manga that I read. I might want to try more of the genre.

Tomie is a regenerating femme fatal. Except it's fatal for her. She drives men to murderous madness but she's the victim. She always comes back though.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Interesting premise! 7y
Andrea4 Not gonna lie, that's a pretty tragic and effed up premise 7y
Sace @Andrea4 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag it is interesting. And trust me, you have no pity for Tomie at all. 7y
aniket.barik I'm reading this now. I've previously read Uzumaki and Gyo by Junji Itou. Uzumaki was amazing. I'm enjoying Tomie but it's not Uzumaki level creepy. 6y
Sace @aniket.barik Uzumaki was seruously creepy. I liked it a lot. 6y

I'm currently reading 2 books with 1-word titles. I'm loving Hex! The details that go into this creepy story are fantastic! And this cover is spot on. 😱

Tomie is going a little slow. I love Junji Ito and I'll fan for him anytime I get the opportunity. BUT I just read Uzumaki, and damn, it was amazing. It's ok, but it feels a little one note and choppy. I'm not very far into it, so I'm hoping it steps up later.

I bought myself an early Christmas present and it arrived this morning! I love these Junji Ito deluxe editions from Viz Media. This collection of Tomie doesn't disappoint. I hope Viz eventually releases a collection of Junji Ito's random stories in this same format. These editions look fantastic next to each other on the shelf. 💕

I SHOULD read the three library books I've checked out, but I don't think I can hold off on this! 😀 #manga
