The Monarch of the Glen
The Monarch of the Glen | Neil Gaiman
16 posts | 20 read | 22 to read
The Monarch of the Glen by bestselling storytelling legend Neil Gaiman is American Gods world novella that will thrill Games of Thrones devotees and Terry Pratchett fans alike. 'Original, engrossing, an endlessly entertaining' George R.R Martin on American Gods He was not sure what he had been looking for. He only knew that he had not found it. Shadow Moon has been away from America for nearly two years. His nights are broken with dangerous dreams. Sometimes he almost believes he doesn't care if he ever returns home. In the Highlands of Scotland, where the sky is pale white and it feels as remote as any place can possibly be, the beautiful and the wealthy gather at a grand old house in the glen. And when the strange local doctor offers him work at the party, Shadow is intrigued. He knows there is no good reason for him to be there. So what do they want with him?

American Gods is probably my least favorite of Gaiman‘s works. I wasn‘t really invested in Shadow‘s story, which is just a framing device for little vignettes containing the stories of various gods. And, well, I at least liked those. I was hoping there‘ll be something similar here, but I was disappointed.

Still, it‘s Gaiman, so the base quality is there despite me not finding exactly what I was looking for.

#Seriesread2022 @TheSpineView ?

This is a short story as a followup after American Gods. It has been such a long time since I read American Gods when it mentioned the MC, Shadow, at first I was thinking Shadow was like an "entity" not a person.? I thought "oooh, this is gonna be spooky"Then I remembered. This was a pretty fun short read, good to visit this world again.

TheSpineView Excellent work! 2y

#WonderousWednesday @Eggs ⚘️

1. Oh boy! I have a very silly system of picking my Bookspin Bingo list, then I try to read the two picks and then read trying to get a Bingo.

2. (⭐️) It was so bad it made me angry.
(⭐️⭐️) Didn't enjoy it, but the writing is ok.
(⭐️⭐️⭐️) It was good or alright.

3.5⭐️

Shadow has been on the road for two years since he left behind everything that happened with Wednesday. Now, while visiting Scotland, he accepts an offer that seems too good to be true but he needs the money. As the “bodyguard” to help keep out the locals, Shadow quickly realizes there‘s a lot more to this job than first meets the eye. Quick thinking and his past experiences are going to help get him out of this situation.

Originally published in the short story collection Fragile Things, this UK hardcover edition is a fantastic return to the world of American Gods. Shadow has been traveling and here has an unsettling experience in England with weirdos who never say what they mean, hints of myth & undercover god types, but especially an overwhelming sense of unease and menace around him that is brilliantly captured in the creepy dark illustrations throughout.

"The smaller you look, the more things unpack. It could take you as long to drive across America as it would to drive across Scotland, if you did it in the right way. It's like, you look on a map, and the coastlines are solid lines. But when you walk them, they're all over the place."

Nothing like illustrations to make Gaiman's weirdness come to life. #AllIsNotLost

A welcome return to the world of Neil Gaiman's American Gods with all the aspects I loved most, old gods translated into modern shapes, mythology never fully revealed and a sense of unease that never quite lifts. The illustrations are perfect, this one reminds me of the gorgeous Tale of the Three Brothers sequence from the final Harry Potter Film

This delightful #bookmail from the UK will further support my goal to #reread American Gods this month. Monarch is a new novella about Shadow set in the Scottish Highlands. Yay!

DeborahSmall I have the original Compton Mackenzie The Monarch of The Glen and his other Scottish stories. Nowhere nicer than the Scottish highlands. Ireland is beautiful but I miss the mountains so much 🏔❤️ 8y
elkeOriginal @DeborahSmall I have only been a tourist but LOVE Scotland and especially the Highlands. One of the best places on earth 💕 8y
DeborahSmall I've lived in Ireland 22 years longer than I was in Scotland as I moved at 17. So I feel little a tourist too. I mountain climbed for 2 years before I moved and thought we'd have mountains in Ireland but hills to me! 8y
