This started off quite oddly for me. It began by introducing a Tsukimi, a nerdy woman who lives with other nerdy woman who are perceived as odd, probably the US version of a crazy cat lady. And her friendship with a cross dressing boy Kuraku. It becomes less about their supposed weirdness and more about how their trauma shaped their lives. I didn‘t like it at first but now have grown fond of the characters and want to see where this goes.

THIS MANGA WAS SO GOOD. I wasn‘t going to read it at first but so happy I did. It‘s a transformation story of a girl who is considered a social outcast to a princess. But within the transformation, mix in romance, cross-dressing and some awkward encounters and you‘ve got this book.

I'm a sucker for a transformation story, especially for girls who are somehow socially awkward. Add in the fact that the one doing the makeovers is a cross-dressing rich boy who is starting to have feelings for one of the girls, and I have to keep reading.

I haven't picked up a new manga series in a while, and I think this one will be a nice reprieve from some of the heavier stuff I have going on this fall.

Loved it, can't wait to get the next one in the series, it's a great easy read with some interesting concepts worth discussing with others.

I‘ve been tasked to write a slice-of-life teen novel (with a touch of fantasy), and let me tell you, that is SO out of my area of expertise. What better way to do research than start reading a series I already love? I watch the anime at least once a month, and the manga is even better. Breaking down gender barriers, celebrating friendship, and pursuing dreams? What more could you want...besides beautiful art, which Higashimura absolutely delivers.

This was super cute! I loved all the different characters

It's pink. It has "princess" in the title. It's manga. It's fair to say that, if not for the #readathon I would never have thought to try this. Guess what: I really enjoyed it! It's sweet, funny, sad and downright peculiar: all in all, a delight.

I borrowed it from my daughter and daresay I will be asking her to lend me the others.

I had to abandon The Loney - was starting to get creepy, so that‘s now my daytime book. I read a bunch of kids books and am now laying down to finally tackle this manga! #readathon

I am so going to use this line at some point!

#readathon or no readathon, an hour of Ulysses is my limit! Now for a complete change of tone and pace. I've borrowed this one from my daughter; what am I letting myself in for?!

I watched the anime with my sister the other week when she was visiting, and the anime just... ends? So in an effort to find out what happens I've started reading this super cute series!

Starting the next Seattle Ladies Comic Club book 💞now if I can only remember to read it backwards.

Princess Jellyfish vol 1

The main character is an aspiring illustrator and jellyfish geek who lives in a building with four other young women geeks. And then one day she befriends a "stylish" - young, fashionable hipster. And thus the beginning of an interesting friendship ?☺️

Overall impression? A definite keeper ? Gives me warm feelings and has me smiling while I read ?

I found the geeky passions of this group of misfits totally infectious. Love the art, the humour, the cross-dressing and the references to myth (ie Crane Woman weaving). Not happy about the message that removing eyeglasses and loosening your hair = beauty. Or that all girls "want to be pretty" and "are princesses from birth." Nonetheless, it's fun. I will probably pick up volume 2 to see where the story goes.

I'm charmed by this group of women who live together and celebrate their nerdiness. They do things like print off anti-vampire talismans from the Internet and stick them to their foreheads.

I'm full of admiration for Akiko Higashimura's artwork. I'm also discouraged by sympathetic characters who say things like:
"A woman without heels is unarmed." And:
"They say that girls turn pretty when they fall in love."

This scene from Princess Jellyfish immediately brought to mind Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being, in which Nao's mother relieves stress by watching jellyfish at an aquarium.

"Group petrification."
There are a lot of fun things about this manga. One of my favourites is the way individuals are shown as if made of stone when they are too shy or embarrassed to move.

"My usual calligraphy pen is sold out!"

Otaku: a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.

This manga is making me search online vocabulary sites!

Fujoshi: (literally "rotten girl") is a self-mockingly pejorative term for female fans of yaoi.
Yaoi: Japanese fictional media focusing on romantic relationships between male characters. (Also known as Boys' Love or BL.)

Ok fine. I'll read the next volume.

I'm not a regular manga reader (it's so hard for me to keep remembering to read right to left, whiiiiine) but I really like this story. I might even watch the anime. (Yes, fine, I know it won't kill me)

Full of charm and vibrant personalities, Princess Jellyfish is adorable. The plot is silly and fun and perfect for my nerdy sensibilities. Love it!
