Tied Up in Tinsel
Tied Up in Tinsel: Inspector Roderick Alleyn #27 | Ngaio Marsh
6 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
Its 1972, and while Elton John and Alice Cooper may be topping the charts, Inspector Alleyns latest case is set in that most gloriously retro environment: The country-house party. A Christmas party, as it happens, where Agatha Troy is enjoying the local holiday pageant and also painting the hosts portrait. The paintings coming along fine, but the pageant goes a little pear-shaped when one of the players disappears. Could one of the partys eccentric guests (are there any other kind?) have been involved? Or perhaps more likely could the finger of blame come to rest on one of the manor-house servants, each of whom happens to be a recent prison parolee? What luck! Inspector Alleyn is on hand to wrap up the questions into the perfect Christmas parcel.

This is a strange one! I‘m new to Marsh and went in assuming it was set in the 1930/40s - it‘s actually written and set in 1972- and seems to be trying to be a traditional country house golden age Murder - with advanced forensics, phone calls left right and centre and lots of ‘modern‘ twists! It felt a bit jumbled and a little ‘off kilter‘ and I do question her take on the cockney dialect! 🤣. But it was a fun, quick read

Spent all day with this #audiobook mystery as I drove to Ikea, browsed, bought this coffee table (on sale!), and assembled it in the attic space I‘m working on. It‘s too late to start this puzzle tonight, but my jigsaw puzzling lair is almost complete!

As far as the mystery goes, I‘m not sure if I‘ve read it before or just later copycats. So far *I* know where the dead body is but none of the characters do and I‘m feeling quite clever🕵🏻‍♂️

First holiday-themed read of the season. It's jingle all the way from here to New Year for me! P.S. I'm back on Litsy after a few weeks' hiatus. So thankful for this peaceful community!
