It's Up to the Women
It's Up to the Women | Eleanor Roosevelt
18 posts | 8 read | 41 to read
Written at the height of the Great Depression, It's Up to the Women is Eleanor Roosevelt's advice to women of all ages on every aspect of life. During a time of extreme hardship, she called on women particularly to do their partcutting costs where needed, spending reasonably, and taking a personal responsibility to keep the economy going. She wrote, Women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a tremendous power in the destiny of the world and with so many of them now holding important positions and receiving recognition and earning the respect of the men as well as the members of their own sex, it seems more than ever that in this crisis, 'It's Up to the Women!'" Roosevelt was among the earliest and most influential people of the time to compile such a wide-ranging treatment of the roles women should take in both private and public life. Her opinions about women's equality, civil rights, and a higher standard of education in the United States were ahead of her times. She argued for: the need for equal pay for equal work the sheer necessity of quality education less indifference regarding the right to vote the necessity of knowing one's neighbors for both urban and rural citizens. She also commented on the stark condition changes related to the Great Depressionhomelessness, hunger, and alterations in the social order within communities and within families. Within this context, she calls upon the women to lead with this timely advice: Although Roosevelt was still within her first year as First Lady of the United States when she wrote this book, she had already rewritten the role with her active participation politics, speaking tours around the country, and her participation in press conferences. In this book, she showed a firm grasp of what was going on in the lives of the American women and of the role women could and should fulfill in the life of the nation.

I forgot to post last night. From Eleanor Roosevelt‘s It‘s Up To The Women discussing the years after women received the right to vote.

“A vote is never an intelligent vote when it is cast without knowledge.”

Parts of this were very dated ( management of household staff 😂), some were interesting as historical documents (suggested menus with prunes once a day), and some were still timely (purchasing power and the importance of voting.) #NFN

#TodayILearned

In 1935 when Eleanor Roosevelt was asked if a woman can ever be president she replied “Not soon, but someday.”

A feminist ahead of her time, she encourages women to work outside of the home, but also gives practical advice on home management and child rearing. Read for Jun2021 Bookclub.

This is Eleanor Roosevelt‘s first published book written at the height of the Great Depression. Her common sense advice ranges from dated (managing servants) to utterly prescient (fair trade clothing). Required reading for all U.S. citizens! (Disregard the coffee stain!) ☕️??

"The only safety that any individual has is his own character and you cannot make any one person's future secure unless you secure the future of all." - Eleanor Roosevelt

...”That is a phase which even the poorest, in planning a clothes budget, should consider, for no matter what we can afford to buy, we cannot afford to buy at the expense of the health and strength of our fellow human beings. When you budget for your clothes remember to find out where you can buy economically but safely for your own health as well as for that of the workers.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

(Arguing for fair trade consumerism in 1932.)

ImperfectCJ Wow! I don't know whether to feel encouraged or discouraged that Roosevelt wrote this in 1932. 5y
Bookwormjillk I was really surprised to see this was written in 1932! 5y

I had the honor to visit Arthurdale and have lunch with a homesteader that moved from Scott‘s Run. He told me this story before I read it in her words:

‘A child had a rabbit as a pet, and an older child said rather mockingly as the small boy brought out his pet to show me, “He says he won‘t let us kill it to eat when it grows up, but we will see about that.”

She made sure no one ate that rabbit!

Hoopiefoot I drive past this whenever I visit my family but have never visited. It sounds amazing—clearly I need to make time for it one of these days! 6y
Lchnessmnstr It‘s worth a stop! I‘ve lived very close to it for decades but had no idea it was there or the history between the 2 communities. 6y

The advice was a bit old fashioned (obliviously!). But she is awesome. I need to read more about and by her.

Bostonmomx2 Often times I think we need to get back a little more old fashioned. Simpler times, not so much chaos and drama. 8y

More discussion on my awesome book haul. I didn't know about this book, did you? I can't wait to dig into it!

Audrey Maisie Dobbs! (edited) 8y
Sydsavvy @Audrey yes! I haven't kept up with the series but it's been tempting me again so I decided to go for it. 8y
Audrey It's a strong series and the tension leading up to WWII is palpable. Although, I wouldn't recommend reading these out of order. Some pivotal character development did occur in the earlier books. 8y
Sydsavvy @Audrey I think that WWII build up is what attracted me back! Ok I'll start getting caught back up. I wondered , so I'm glad you told me. 8y

The book has a lot of great, still relevant advice. It also has recipes that include "hot prune juice". So kind of a mixed bag.

Yossarian You'd drink your prune juice COLD?!? 8y
AlleyChen Technically she's not telling you to drink it hot but to cook with it. Not sure if that's better or worse 8y
Sydsavvy Wow. Had no idea. Maybe she's onto something? 8y
AlleyChen I dunno. But if you'd like to give it a try and report back, I'm all ears! 8y

Mehso-so

This short volume, written in 1932, has some astounding moments of prescience. Roosevelt gives practical tips for women (and, at times, men) meant to help families through the depression and also help to change attitudes and values in the changing world. But, to a modern audience, the advice is not particularly informative and at times is clearly dated. #netgalley

Theresa I read this book earlier this year & had the exact same reaction. 8y

Have I ever wanted a NetGalley approval so badly? I need to feel empowered. Therapy, my husband, Leslie Knope, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's been doing a lot for me this week, but Eleanor might actually get me over the hump.
