The past isn't over.... An unspeakable act has ripped apart the idyllic town of Bakersville, Oregon, and its once-peaceful residents are demanding quick justice. But though a boy has confessed to the horrific crime, evidence shows he may not be guilty. Officer Rainie Conner, leading her first homicide investigation, stands at the center of the controversy. It's hitting too close to home, bringing back her worst nightmares, threatening to expose her secret sins. But with the boy's life at stake, she won't let anything stop her from finding the real killer. With the help of FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, Rainie comes closer to a deadly truth than she can imagine. Because out there in the shadows a man watches her and plots his next move. He knows her secrets. He kills for sport. He's already brought death to Bakersville and forever shattered the community. But what he has really come for is Rainie -- and he won't leave until he has destroyed her....

TWs: gun violence, death of a child, mention of sexual assault, coarse language, sexual content.

Officer Lorraine (Rainie) Conner lives in Bakersville, a small town in Oregon, where nothing much happens, until one morning when she is called into a shooting at the local school. A young teacher & 2 pupils are dead with several others injured, but the biggest shock of all is that the guns are being held by Danny, son of the sheriff (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf (Rainie's boss & friend.) Danny is 13 years old but the prosecutor wants to push for him to be tried in adult court. Meanwhile, FBI profile Pierce Quincy flies in to examine the case as this isn't the first school shooting which has some strange elements. The more evidence Quincy looks at, the more convinced he is that Danny isn't solely responsible.

OutsmartYourShelf I wasn't impressed with the first book in the series (The Perfect Husband) but wow, did Gardner pull it out of the bag with this one. It started off quite slow & I wasn't sure I was going to finish reading it, but the plot suddenly took off & never stopped. The book deals with the sensitive subject of what can turn a teenager into a killer. I think that the turmoil of all those concerned is well-handled. 9mo
OutsmartYourShelf As for the ending, I'm usually quite good at predicting twists but I did not see that one coming. 4.5🌟

Book 4 that I‘m reading this year is The Third Victim by Lisa Gardner she‘s good at writing creepy, scary, suspenseful, and great books. I‘ll be reading past my bedtime tonight 😍📖

Caffeinated_Reader Omg. It is 5:10am and I just finished this book. It was such a frustrating story but definitely suspenseful and worth pulling an all nighter over. It‘s scary to me because some of the crimes in the book remind me of current events 😱 terrifying. 7y

#orangecovers for #photoadaynov16. A lot of my recent reads have had orange covers, but thought I'd go with an oldie, but goodie to post. I love this type of book - Lisa Gardner, Tami Hoag, Iris Johansson to name a few. I read them so fast! I used to buy them but learned to check out from the library since they only last a day or two. @RealLifeReading

When you try to log into your account on your library's website and it says your card expired. 😭 Thankfully the ebook I had checked out didn't disappear off my kindle.

After reading a review by Abby (@crimebythebook), Lisa Gardner has become one of my favorite authors. 😊
If you enjoy crime novels, give Abby a follow. She has some great recommendations.
