Aaron leaves his partner, Walter, of 20 years and decides to move to San Francisco. Which might sound fabulous!!! but is not. His present is interspersed and informed by these somber and subdued memories. Many we can all relate to. Ostlund has such language that she‘s able to illuminate every why and how. Have you ever read prose that has comforted and held you in ways you never knew prose could? That was this book. It was like coming home 👇🏼
I‘m really liking my next book so far.
65 pages read, 6 mile walk, farmers market, Friends of the Library book sale, bookish mail...excellent start to the weekend
A deeply felt novel about a sensitive late-30s gay man who leaves his lover of two decades and moves to San Francisco to reinvent himself. But for the wounds of his childhood—which surface with a vengeance—everything would‘ve been fabulous; what happens instead is narrated with a deep, aching beauty that just might restore your faith in fiction. Not to mention humanity. A stunning debut.

#LitsyReadingChallenge Well I got 22/25 and will have to settle for that. In my defense, my daughter was in a terrible car accident in March and I spent a lot of time caring for her (she has since made a full recovery) and we have spent the holidays selling our home and buying another. Good excuses, you must admit!
One of my favorite novels of 2017 thanks to @BooksForEmpathy ! I absolutely loved this novel and have recommended it a number of times. A heartbreaking exploration of relationships and love as well as family and understanding oneself. #VACATIONBOOTY
This book was beautiful and sad and hopeful. We meet Aaron when he's leaving his boyfriend of 20 years. The book is a journey through Aaron's life as he reflects on and revisits his painful childhood and how it has impacted his whole life. It's the story of trauma and healing. It's beautifully written. #queerbooks 📚
#audiobookwalk Saturday market edition
Saturday morning. No one else is in the house for the first time in a long time. Reading bliss 📚☕😍
Wow. Very sad story and look at life, yet hopeful too. It's the story of Aaron looking back on his life, alternating with his present day life and struggles. When I was about 75% through the book I found myself needing to go back. I restarted about a quarter into the book and just reading and browsing quickly I picked up so much more that I had somehow overlooked. This made me enjoy the ending even more. What a great story!
Aaaand we're hooked. Great start to my #qgp2 read for this month! #queergoespostal #queersgopostal #queerbooks
This book is deeply sad and incredibly hopeful and lovely. Unexpectedly funny and sweet.
I've read a lot of books this year -- check my reviews -- and this gorgeous Chinese puzzle, this lovingly sculpted word-garden of a book is easily the best one since Did You Ever Have a Family. A quiet yet revealing character study, glacial in that far more is happening beneath the surface. The author rewards the reader on every page with a trail of morsels that leads from cover to cover. Didn't want it to end!
Grabbed thus book at City Lights in San Francisco and holy shit it's amazing. Can't remember who recommend it but wow.
A story about soul searching and starting over set in our very own San Francisco.
Listened to the audio of this one... I never wanted it to end. After 20 years with his partner, Aaron decides to leave and moves to San Francisco. The book alternates between chapters of Aaron's past and his present efforts to move forward. Interesting and heartbreaking characters. Rewarding read!!
