There were a lot of statistics in this book, most of them were no surprise if you‘re even remotely familiar with the topic. But I would have liked more research (maybe it just hasn‘t been done) on ways to counteract the negative impacts of this Disney Princess pink explosion culture the book focuses on. I thought the author had a limited view of feminism or maybe it‘s changed that much since publication. I liked the personal sections the best.

I was hoping to find out why millennials like Disney so much; instead, I read a book by a Gen X mother that doesn‘t understand why her Gen Z daughter likes pink and is so good at the Internet.

Unlike Peggy‘s other books, there aren‘t a lot of solutions here, perhaps because she is talking about her own daughter!!

Anyway, I just found it to be an exercise in enumerating the ways Gens X and Z differ. 2.5⭐️

I can't. Nope. She is clearly not in any way, shape, or form a knowledgeable scholarly person. Her writing and "insights" come of as ignorant. And I don't know what crap censored version of Grimm Fairy Tales she was reading but they sure as hell did leave the sex bits in the tales. And damnit Cinderella wanted a dress and to go to the ball she didn't ask to attract the prince! It is a "girl power" story.

Ok I'm going back in. If you hear that loud thud it was me throwing this book against the wall.

Princess culture is complicated, so I am happy to find a well-researched book that dissects it, identifies problems, and proposes solutions. Some notes:
-Princesses perpetuate patriarchal constructs they supposedly combat, don't encourage female friendship
-Division of genders widens gap between them
-Girls are encouraged to define themselves by appearance
-Death of mothers in movies = normalizes a lack of female role models in girl‘s lives

I also read in my car when I'm waiting to pick up Man Cub, but I wasn't going back outside to take a picture of the inside of my car, it's cold out there.

I think I'm going to have to make a change to my #litsyatoz 'The Crimson Petal and the White' is just pissing me off. Perhaps I will come back to it at a less militant/staunch feminist time when I can better allow my mind to accept that it was a different time. Until that time I'm replacing my letter C with this book.

My fav August read(s)? Well, Litsy obvs., but I signed up a fortnight ago, so before that there was this must-read. The reach and speed with which Disney princess culture has gained traction is alarming and damaging. The insidiousness of what I've decided to term 'pedestal culture' is creating a revolution no one signed up for - girls are constantly fed the msg to sparkle, shine and be admired rather than engage and interact. Yes, oh my goodness, yes. While this book is a must read for everyone, it's especially so for people with daughters or granddaughters. Learn how much marketing changes the way we view femininity and girls expressing it. I want to hand this out at every baby shower I attend. 👏🏽👸🏽 | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Even though none of the observations in this book surprised me, it still stirred up some anger at how our society defines and constrains women (and the reality that going against the mold is often a painful experience). Read it to understand what is, and get a glimpse of what could be.
