The Ladies' Lending Library
The Ladies' Lending Library: A Novel | Janice Kulyk Keefer
9 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
It is August of 1963, the year of the Taylor/Burton film epic Cleopatra, showcasing a passion too grand to be contained on the movie screen. The women of the Kalyna Beach cottage community gather for gin and gossip, trading the current racy bestsellers among themselves as they seek a brief escape from the predictable rhythms of children and chores. But dramatic change is coming this summer as innocence falters and the desire for change reaches a boiling point, threatening to disrupt the warm, sweet, heady days and the lives of parents and children, family and friends, forever.

This book was just meh for me. I rarely give any book 3 stars but this was painful at times and not in a good way!

My stack for #20in4 with @Andrew65 I am buddy reading the middle three, and reading through Shakespeare throughout the year, a few pages a day. The top book is what I read once I‘m done with the others each day 🤣 #pemberlittens #whatthedickens #shakespeareinayear #losersclub

Andrew65 Wow! Some stack! Good luck 😊👍 4y

1. I share books that live on my shelf within my family dad, brother and daughter and a couple of good friends. Those that I decide not to keep I either #bookitforward to my #jb group friends or donate to the Friends of the Library. 2. I read across all genres except Horror and Romance, but mostly fiction: historical, literary, mysteries and suspense. 3. Nope, pictures, candles and favorite knick knacks grace the shelves as well
@SilversReviews

TheSpineView My shelves are so full they will hold only books and some sheet music. Two months ago I added a 4th bookshelf and it too is now full. No space for more shelves.😕 6y
SilversReviews Thanks for playing. Great answers. 😊 6y
Deblovestoread @TheSpineView I have 4 bookcases and need a 5th but have no where to put it. I am getting pretty picky about what I keep these days. 6y

1. Yes! My sister comes to visit once or twice a year, and when she sees a book on a Goodreads that I have, and she wants to read, she texts me to save it for her. I don‘t keep books I‘ve read, I share and donate.
2. I occasionally pick up a book in the genres I don‘t prefer, and like it or not, I come back to my favorites.
3. Who has room on the shelves for anything else? Not me!

SilversReviews Thanks for playing. LOVE your answer to #3. 😊 I am taking two and one-half bags of books to my sisters next week when I visit. 😊 6y

I've never read this, but it's on sale and sounds like it could be good.

My favorite lending library: my parents neighborhood library! The neighborhood has over 6,000 residents, mostly retired and a large number of them well-educated. This combination means the library is typically stocked with great books of all genres. We walked in with a bag to be shelved and out with a few more than we took in... It was a good haul day.

Kaye Sounds like such a neat place. 7y
kspenmoll Wonderful place! 📚❤️ 7y
AlaMich It looks so tiny though! 7y

jbhops @AlaMich it is small compared to a true library where you check out books. This is essentially a little free library. Take what you want, keep it forever or bring it back sometime. 7y
abbsinwonderland I LOVE THIS! I actually have a little library (not much at all) across the street from my house. I'll have to get a pic of it after I drop off some books for kiddos there! 7y
Cathythoughts That‘s brilliant 7y

Mehso-so

As the steward of two little free libraries, the title of this book really appealed to me! So maybe my expectations were unrealistic? For some crazy reason I expected this book to be more about books and book club LOL. In fact, there was very little mention of the books they read and book club. It wasn't a bad book just not at all what I expected and I never felt fully invested in it. Maybe that's my fault for having expectations 😂

What an awesome surprise to find Gracie's Little Lending Library while taking a walk with the bub in my parents' neighbourhood! It seemed fitting to borrow this book and hope for a bathtub read while the grandparents watch the little man tonight.
