Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters
Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters | John Steptoe
40 posts | 39 read | 6 to read
Mufaro was a happy man. Everyone agreed that his two daughters were very beautiful. Nyasha was kind and considerate as well as beautiful, but everyone -- except Mufaro -- knew that Manyara was selfish, badtempered, and spoiled. When the king decided to take a wife and invited "The Most Worthy and Beautiful Daughters in the Land" to appear before him, Mufaro declared proudly that only the king could choose between Nyasha and Manyara. Manyara, of course, didn't agree, and set out to make certain that she would be chosen. John Steptoe has created a memorable modem fable of pride going before a fall, in keeping with the moral of the folktale that was his inspiration. He has illustrated it with stunning paintings that glow with the beauty, warmth, and internal vision of the land and people of his ancestors.

The illustrations in this book are super cool I think you could even have students make predictions about the pictures/observations.

This book is a great book to read to students. It also shows different cultures that students may not be familiar with. I think it shows a good lesson for how to treat others with kindness and show empathy.

This TL Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Award book is a great way to introduce students to Africa. This resource gives your students Africa at a glance as a RA rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/MufarosBeautifulDaughters-BL.pdf Students are able to connect the resources with the book. UDL 6.3 and ESOL32

DrSpalding I may have mentioned this in class but this was my read aloud choice when I was in elementary education major at UCF! This is such a wonderful version of the classic Cinderella tale. This would be an excellent book to include in social studies instruction specifically regarding geography. 5y

#WanderingJune Day 22: Not just one #AfricanLady but two. In this particular tale we are introduced to sisters Manyara and Nyasha, celebrated for their beauty in a small village in Africa. While Nyasha was kind-hearted, quiet, and long-suffering – her sister Manyara was the exact opposite being ill-tempered, vain, and arrogant. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-34g

This book is so beautifully illustrated. The pictures are so life-like, and the theme of the story is really great too: just because you are beautiful does not mean you shouldn‘t be kind; kindness is more important than how beautiful you are.

The heartfelt story & beautiful imagery that John Steptoe gives in this TL folktale is mesmerizing. This story teaches the importance of inner beauty & selflessness. “Mufaro‘s Beautiful Daughters” is a must read for children of all ages & backgrounds, as it won both the Caldecott Medal & Coretta Scott King Award. “Mufaro‘s Beautiful Daughters” would make for a great RT thanks to the many characters that appear throughout the tale! #LAE3414sp19

Caldecott honor. 1987. Picturebook. Beautifully imaged story that shows diversity of cultures. Theme is how being kind will bring you farther in life. Two sisters that are opposites- one is kind and polite, the other is rude and angry. From the point of view of a narrator watching the story.

A piece of traditional literature (TL), this book was an amazing read and a great addition to all classrooms. This African tale has won the Caldecott Honor, Boston Globe Horn, and the Corbett‘s Scott King award. It tells a story of two beautiful sisters who have been called upon by the king to decide who he will marry. The king presents his self in many different ways throughout the story to see who is beautiful inside and out.

Laura.S Read to see who he chooses to marry and why. #UCFLAE3414SP18 https://www.woojr.com/mufaros-beautiful-daughters-lesson-plan-activities/ Link takes you to an amazing resource for lesson plans in all content areas that go along with this book! I would use this s a Storytelling (S) book because it was originally passed down by oral readings in Africa. It would be cool to recreate that in a classroom. 7y
Laura.S UDL 9.3, develop self-assessment and reflection goes along with the book because the main lesson of the story is to be kind and to look at yourself for who you are. EL 24, incorporate the culture of second language learners in your curriculum is able to checked off as this tale originated in Zimbabwe and we never know were our students will come from. 7y
Noelle5 I definitely can see how this won the Caldecott award- the cover is amazingly beautiful! 7y
JenniferMc What a beautiful story and promotes diversity and culture in the classroom. Your post makes me want to read this book to find out who he marries and why. 7y

SofiPasternack I got it from my daughter‘s Scholastic flyer from school, plus several other cool fairy tale/folklore books. Waaaaaay better than reading Snow White etc for the umpteenth time. 7y

Mufaro‘s Beautiful Daughters is a TL, Caldecott Honor book written by
John Steptoe and could be used as a S. This is an African tale about
two daughters that have gone into the city with the hopes of marrying
the King. On the way into the city, the girls are tested by the King
who disguises himself in many different forms and only one passes the
test and eventually becomes the Queen and the other sister becomes a
servant.

JocelynNolton I found a lesson plan that would be great to use with this
book but it also teaches students about the characteristics of
folktales. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mufaros-beauti...
The UDL principle 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols, 3.2- highlight
patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships & EL 11-
place language in meaningful context could be achieved with this
book. #ucflae3414f17

Mufaro‘s Beautiful Daughters is a fiction picture book by John Steptoe and illustrated by John Steptoe. This Caldecott Award Winner focuses on sisters that must pass a series of tests to be considered a beautiful & worthy wife for the Great King. A dramatic re-enactment (DR) would be a great teaching strategy. It‘ll get students engaged! #UCFLAE3414F17

laurie_jayy https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mufaros-beauti... links to a variety of lesson plans. These lesson plans range from a science lesson plan to an art lesson plan. 7y
laurie_jayy UDL 9.3 “Develop self-assessment and reflection.” This is a great UDL to use because students can think about the type of the person they are and what they would do if they were the sisters in the story. This can turn into a great discussion!
EL 45 “Use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities.” The students could compare and contrast the two sisters that the book focuses on.
7y
DrSpalding Excellent UDL and EL strategies. Knowing that this is the African-American Cinderella tale, what genre would it be? This just so happens to be the book I read aloud during my time at UCF in this course.❤️📚 7y
EveAstrouck This book sounds like a great way to get children to have a great discussion on comparisons between siblings! 7y

It was published the year I was born and I read it over and over. Here I am at 30 with it still in my home ☺ Happy birthday, @Liberty #LIBERTHDAY
