The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle
The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Thing Beneath the Bed | Patrick Rothfuss, Nate Taylor
This is not a book for children. It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales. There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it. The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in. Simply said: This is not a book for children.

Eins der besten Bücher, die es gibt. Sehr schöne Bilder und ein wirklich überraschendes Ende.

'This shit is not for children. Seriously.' The sticker on the front is true to the nature of the book itself. I'd say it's worth it, though I bet it'll be funnier to me when I'm reading it again.

Holy moly, this book is batshit crazy hiding under a picture book exterior! Love it! And am slightly worried I like it 😉
Definitely not for kids (as the 'this shit is not for kids' sticker on the cover makes clear) - not even for adults without an appreciation for seriously twisted humor/world view. If you are the right kind of twisted weirdo you will love this. I need to hunt down book 2 now...

moranadatter I loved this one! The art is perfect. 8y
RanaElizabeth There's a great video somewhere on YouTube of Rothfuss doing a reading of this and then backtracking and highlighting all the murderous stuff. 8y
brilliantglow I want to read this so much but I can't find a copy anywhere. 8y

Loves this picture book for adults! It hit upon funny and sarcastic vibes as well as having a sort of child-esk feel to it. I loved the different endings and the "omg!" Factor at the end

5-stars. It's short, but in no way a sweet story. And despite its appearance, this is not a book for very young kids. 😅 If you're a fan of Rothfuss' work, try this out. The ending will surprise you.
