The Divine Comedy
The Divine Comedy: Purgatory | Dante Alighieri, John Gordon Nichols
This is the second installment in Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. This verse translation with facing page Italian offers the dual virtues of fidelity to Dante's text with the poetic feeling necessary to give the English reader a sense of the work's poetic greatness in Italian.

We know what happens in Hell.. But what about Purgatory Dante's Inferno revealed some titillating details about the punishments inflicted on sinners - but in a way, we already knew what happens to people in Hell. ⬇️

suvata What we don't know is what happens to people who end up in Purgatory. In this second part of The Divine Comedy, Dante probes the mysteries of that strange and often misunderstood place between Earth and Heaven.

Purgatory is a place to work through - no one gets stuck there forever. The souls in Dante's Purgatory must climb up seven terraces on Mount Purgatory before they can reach Heaven.

Dante continues to obsess on repulsion over Pope Boniface VIII. My takeaway is Boniface was to his era what Trump is to ours. Telescoping back 700 years it all seems a bit humorous. Seriously though, Purgatorio offers beautiful glimmers of life, material life and spiritual life. Onwards (upwards?) to Paradise next week!

MarkoPDX I never made it to Paradise. In so many ways.

Midway through Puragtorio, therefore midway through The Divine Comedy

I see why this poem has lasted through the years, there's a lot here to unpack. So far, it keeps getting better as it goes along.

Picture is from the web.

Quote is from Canto XVII.

I‘m oddly empty of an overall response to this, despite 8 weeks of reading, taking extensive notes and thoroughly enjoying the ritual of it. Maybe I lost something wading through Lethe too. Not sure. Dante, in the hands of the Hollander‘s, is gentle, exceptionally sophisticated, a touch heretical, playful and human despite his better inclinations. His lengthy purification is not so vivid as Inferno, but still he essentially defines this place.

🦥❤️ “a love of good that falls short of its duty”

I just passed the halfway point of the entire Comedy, and I‘m where pretty sure this is where Dante would have me spend most of my afterlife. ... But, it‘s not a pleasant place.

Enjoying this, in Canto VI now. Sensing a Shakespeare-like feel in lines 124-6 (the pup is only included for entertainment value)

Fun fact - it‘s not clear what Marcellus Dante was referring to. There are at least two possibilities- one who railed against Caesar (c50 bce) and one who fought Hannibal (c220 bce)

The Florentine cats are pleased I finally finished The Divine Comedy. I would maybe read Inferno again, but with a lot of notes, and ideally in a class. Feel like there was so much I missed in this poem but overall I think worth an attempt. #litsyclassics

bookandcat Love this trilogy. 💙 Read it for a class that was solely on the Divina Commedia in college. Purgatory is my fave of the three. Paradise is interesting because his conceit is that since Paradise is beyond human words and understanding, he will write in language that is nearly beyond human words and understanding to comprehend 🤣 We also got to learn about his IRL love (Beatrice, of course!). 6y
JessNevertheless @bookandcat Haha definitely noticed that about Paradise, I'm glad there was a reason I felt more lost. Definitely would have liked and appreciated this better in a class format. Will probably try again if I ever see one offered. 6y

Can anyone recommend a good version of The Divine Comedy? I thought I had it on my shelves but apparently not (how did that happen?) so it's a chance to get a hold of a decent translation (English or Spanish). Thanks!

Louise I just received Robert Pinsky's english translation of the Inferno. It looks very good. 8y
LectricSheep The Longfellow is the "standard," but I prefer the Mandelbaum. The Martinez/Durling translation is the most literal I've found. The Palma (from Norton) is probably my least favorite of the ones I've read. These are all in English, btw. ?the inferno has the most fun translations-- Pinsky and Mary Jo Beard especially. 8y

LectricSheep ? my best friend calls The Divine Comedy her "religion," so I've gotten coaxed into quite a few read throughs. 8y
Faibka @LectricSheep Awesome 😆 8y
Jae I did an amazing online course on it from Georgetown through EdX and we used the English translation by Robert Hollander. I have also used an older one by Sisson. The recent translation by Clive James is very accessible. The course is still available - it was incredible! 8y
Faibka @Jae Great!!!! I'm looking at the course info right now, thank you so much for mentioning it! Wow, I guess there are many good translations, I'll have to decide which one to pick! Thanks! 😄 8y

My husband and I finally got a weekend off together so we took a mini vacation to Monterey, California. Little did I know, the Museum of Monterey had a Salvador Dali exhibit with over 200 original pieces! This nerd was in heaven! This is Dali's illustrated Divine Comedy. Breathtaking, bizarre, beautiful. #art #books #illustration #dali
