#IdiomInsight

#SwanSong is usually a final accomplishment or performance, one's last work. This idiom alludes to the old belief that swans normally are mute but burst into beautiful song moments before they die. Although the idea is much older, the term was first recorded in English in 1890.

I thought of the swans in Newberry Award winning book from my childhood that was adapted as an ABC Afterschool Special in 1974. (Those were the days!) 😉

These are but a fraction of the many books she wrote. Betsy Byars won the 1971 Newbery Medal and many other literary awards. She died 2 years ago at the age of 91.

Reading this out loud to my sickie, who is quarantined in her room. I think my girlie has the flu. Fever, fatigue & cough. She had a flu shot, so I‘m hoping it‘s mild. Also hoping it stays with her and the rest of the family doesn‘t get it. Washing hands like crazy!!

#12DaysofChristmas Swans and Maid(en)s

Had to read Summer of the Swans when coaching Battle of the Books and it‘s one of those books for kids that deals with heavy family issues without a lot of levity.

I haven‘t read the pictured Batman story but it was the first thing that came to mind. It‘s a classic Batman versus Ra‘s Al Ghul story and gets reissued every few years

#12DaysofChristmas #7SwansASwimming I'm picking Sara and Charlie Godfrey from this 1971 Newbery Medal winner that I read and enjoyed as a child. Charlie, 10, is mentally disabled after a childhood fever and loves to watch the swans swimming in the lake but disappears and Sara, his 14-year-old sister, must find him. I haven't read this one in years and years-I may have to see if the library has a copy and reread it. 📚💙

I love Sara in this paragraph.
(And prison shirt only means a souvenir t-shirt, nothing related to actual prison)
(Marked spoiler because this is in the the end, a moment of change and clarity for Sara, but it's an almost 50 year old book, so there's probably a small group of people who would be concerned about spoilers.)

Yup. That pretty accurately describes adolescent awful feeling.

Just your average Saturday night: looking up old favorites from my youth at the library to reread.
