The Queen of Spades
The Queen of Spades | Alexander Pushkin
Renowned Russian author Alexander Pushkin has gained acclaim as one of the most skilled and accomplished literary figures of his generation. Short stories were Pushkin's specialty, and "The Queen of Spades" is an expertly composed tale that addresses timeless themes of greed and acquisitiveness -- and their often-dire consequences.

I disliked this short story the first time I read it years ago and I forgot I‘d read it. I still don‘t like it. It‘s quite sad though because it could be quite good—about why an old woman gave up gambling. Then the ending falls so flat. Fortunately it‘s very short so there‘s that. #letterQ #halloweenatoz

Published in 1834, this is a memorable, ironic tale about greed. There‘s a supernatural component, but we don‘t know if it‘s meant literally or if our man Hermann is losing it.

This acclaimed short story is easy to digest in one sitting — and just like that you‘ve read Pushkin. ♠️

Cathythoughts Oh that‘s a nice one 👍🏻♥️ 5y
Leniverse @Cathythoughts Folio Society. I was looking through their sale a year and a half ago, and the Spouse leaned over my shoulder, pointed and said "That one". I asked, "You want to read Pushkin?" He replied, "Is that who it's by? Bonus. I do want to read Pushkin, but I just thought that's the best looking book there." ? 5y
Nute Wow! That‘s really pretty! 5y

#BookWithAGorgeousCover The Balbusso twins are two of my favourite Folio Society illustrators 😍 #SeptinBooks18

Leniverse I have the Pushkin. When I ordered a bunch of Folios on their new year sale, the spouse looked over my shoulder and said "Get that one too. It's the prettiest one." ? I'm a bit sad that it is practically invisible in the sleeve and bookcase. It deserves to be on display. 6y
aa_guer2021 I am glad that Pushkin has a folio edition and that it is so beautiful, but...ouch. 💸😂 6y
Moray_Reads @ruskigurl16 I think it's worth it. My savings aren't so sure... 6y

Moray_Reads @Leniverse it's a beautiful cover. I think I'll periodically put out a volume or two on my new shelves so that I can appreciate the full covers more often 6y

An interesting short story of gambling greed and reaping what you sow. Very entertaining.

Meh. I read this only for a challenge in Goodreads. I couldn‘t get into it. At. All.

The collection I read today contained this short story and five others, all with morals or twists at the end. The translation was good, and I found I enjoyed each short story. Perfect pick for “Q” in the #LitsyClassics challenge!

A clever little short story I found on the Serial Reader app. Beware of things that appear to good to be true.

Reading my classics Q and X first this year, LOL #LitsyClassicsAtoZ

Samplergal That‘s the only reason I read it. Dreadful. 7y

Too short for me to really get invested... and I typically like short stories, but here I didn't connect.

This concludes #LitsyAtoZ for me.

Maybe it's because of how short it was, it was probably more me than it. I didn't connect to it. I found the mystery intriguing but with how short of a story it was it felt rushed.

Really enjoyed this one! Quick and entertaining while looking at greed. Ironically I was playing my friend poker via text while reading this. But at least ours was fake money! ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

A #royal from my tbr and an image lifted from the Folio Society website as I don't own this one (yet!). I've read and loved Eugene Onegin and others by Pushkin and really must get to this one. #ReadJanuary

Hobbinol I hope to read this this year! (I ❤the opera❗)... You have such good taste! 8y
Moray_Reads @Hobbinol thank you! We seem to have a lot of overlap taste-wise, isn't Litsy great? Have to admit I have never been to an opera(!) but I have tickets to an opera version of The Trial next month, I hope I like it 😨😨 8y
