I was right! I had read this book before. I didn‘t recognize anything in the plot though until the last hour or so. Clearly it didn‘t make much of an impression on me. Not my favorite Dorothea Benton Frank book; I‘m glad to be done with it. I was so glad to see that fountain back on. They were off for quite some time after everything shut down for COVID; it was sad. #audiowalk
There are certain writers, and Frank is one, who turn all women who are not the mc‘s family & friends into sluts, tramps, and/or stupid or evil people. It doesn‘t help that the mc, Beth, is 23 yet sounds like a prim & proper 90 year old! She vacillates between wanting to throw herself at a man and playing coy little games. She harshly judges other women, calling them tramps & sluts; these judgements are based on no evidence. Yuck. #audiowalk
This narrator is determined to drive me insane! First there was the “plough mud” incident; now she‘s pronounced the Ravenel Bridge to make the “rave” part rhyme with “brave!” It‘s “rave” like in “ravel” — like “sleep knits up the raveled sleeve.” Sigh.
Listened to more of this book on my walk in order to avoid starting The Regulators early. I‘m bothered that the narrator keeps pronouncing “plough mud” as “plow mud;” I learned “pluff mud” — as in “fluff” — when I grew up in SC. I like the way this little free library on my campus was painted. #audiowalk
Well, my plan to do absolutely nothing went bust. My husband and daughter persuaded me to go swimming. Before I did that, I went for a short walk. I think I might have read this book before. I‘m on chapter two and two characters that I might remember just arrived. I‘ve remembered nothing up until this point. I‘m still not positive, but they seem very familiar. #audiowalk
Even though it was gloomy, I got out and walked for a short bit. Sullivan‘s Island was a decent book, but I never realized, until reading this so close to Frank‘s The Christmas Pearl, how often she uses the magical Black woman trope. This woman rarely has a family and is completely devoted to the main character. It gets a little old. #audiowalk
I told Susan (the mc) not to do something stupid. Did she listen? Of course not. 😄 I have a few hours left in this book. It was such a beautiful, although a little chilly, day that I hated to come inside. #audiowalk #BFC21

Every room had at least 100 books?🤔
Must be a description of Heaven!!
Loved the sassy house, the mysticism, and the Hamiltons and Hayses, but the throwing in of an over-the-top subplot in the last two chapters had me eye rolling Hard 🙄
The mood for easy-to-get-into stories continues

@ptkpepe98 you spoiled me!! I love all my goodies! Thank you thank you!! Happy #Sockswap day!! ❤️❤️
I hated this book, just hated it. The main character is a shallow, stupid, 23 year old woman with daddy issues. We keep being told how smart she is, but she certainly doesn't act like it. The plot is thin and ridiculous, with a stupid twist near the end. If I had not read other books by Frank that I actually liked, I'd never pick up another thing written by her. 😡😝
I haven't read any of her books recently, but I've enjoyed many of Frank's books set on islands off the coast of Georgia. #rockinmay #homebythesea
I'm not sure I get this simile but it seems perfect nonetheless.
