Magician: Master | Raymond E. Feist
32 posts | 60 read | 20 to read
He held the fate of two worlds in his hands... Once he was an orphan called Pug, apprenticed to a sorcerer of the enchanted land of Midkemia.. Then he was captured and enslaved by the Tsurani, a strange, warlike race of invaders from another world. There, in the exotic Empire of Kelewan, he earned a new name-- "Milamber." He learned to tame the unnimagined powers that lay withing him. And he took his place in an ancient struggle against an evil Enemy older than time itself. "Totally gripping... A fantasy of epic scope, fast-moving action and vivid imagination." -- "The Washington Post Book World"

I feel like this was a pretty solid ending for the duology. I get why they separated the original book where they did and why but I feel like you lose something having the break in between. This one was fun because it wasn't focused solely on Thomas and Pug so we got to see the secondary characters shine. I will say things ended in a way that I don't really feel the need to carry on with the series. Still enjoyed my time with this though.

Todays book is one I‘ve probably owned the longest & reread more than thrice. Given to me at 15yrs old(now 51 so 36yrs ago😱)and personally signed at a Con my son took it to for me, it‘s one of my most treasured books & loved for the story as well. Started my love of high fantasy & will forever be my benchmark for it.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Love it!! 📚❤️ 2y
Graywacke I think was 18 when i read this, still under Robert Jordan‘s spell. 🙂 2y

#WyrdAndWonder (belated) day 19 | who‘s afraid of the suck fairy?

She‘s left her tarnish on a number of teen faves, and left me scared to open others.

Still, I‘m kinda wanting to revisit Midkemia after the Bookish Memory Check tag got me thinking about it. Riftwar was never a favourite, but I recall liking some of the characters and I fancy a slice of classic epic fantasy. But will these be covered in suck fairy dust?

Lucy_Anywhere Me! There were so many books I adored as a teen but would be tarnished with a re-read (looking at you, Redwall!) 4y
imyril @Lucy_Anywhere oh heck, I‘d be terrified to revisit Redwall. I only read the first three, but I loved Mossflower. 4y

Intricate fantasy story where the line between good and evil is very blurred.
An amazing story about the growth of a young boy and his psychological challenges when faced with differente perspectives of the same problem.
Packed with action, drama, love stories, magic and sword fighting, elves and dwarfes, dragons and legendary items... everything a good fantasy story should have.

Finally, what was in that huge box from booktopia.com.au? First up we have a brand new edition of Raymond E Feist‘s classic fantasy epic, Magician. Plus it‘s signed! I have a 30yr old, pretty battered edition that was personally signed by Feist at SuperNova in Sydney a few years ago so I‘m debating whether I should collect the series in the new editions & retire my original novels to the collectibles shelves or gift it to a virgin Feist reader🤔

GlassAsDiamonds I‘m having such Aussie love scrolling these! If you went to SuperNova in Sydney, we probably passed each other! 😂😂😂😂 6y

#OldCoolBooks #day23 #Masterpiece As far as I‘m concerned, this is a masterpiece of high fantasy. It‘s still the benchmark I hold every fantasy book to, it has everything you want in a great story. There‘s castles & battles, magic, elves,a RiftWar between two completely different worlds & a young boy with a rags to power story. This copy is my original edition that I‘ve had since I was 15yrs old & was personally signed by the author at a convention.✍🏼

ReadZenRites Well read and well loved 😊💗 7y

#LitsyClassics #MayLovesClassics #day10 #Fantasy I‘ve been reading fantasy books since I was a preteen in the early 80s. These are if not my #Top4 then they‘re at least in my #Top10 Top left is The Wheel Of Time by Robert Jordan- Top right is Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson- Bottom right is the DiscWorld series by Terry Pratchett & Bottom left is The RiftWar Saga by Raymond.E.Feist. Every one of them phenomenal!

readingjedi I have those same editions of the Donaldson. They were my late father's. I credit him with my love of fantasy. 7y
Lizpixie @readingjedi I‘ve had them since I was 17, which means they‘re 30yrsold. That‘s depressing!👵🏻 7y
jfalkens I have the Feist series on my to-read bookcase and I'm almost done with Winter's Heart 😀😀 7y

jfalkens Also I love Fantasy! It was banned growing up but my husband introduced me to it and now I read mostly Fantasy 😀 7y
readingjedi @Lizpixie It's possible my dad's copies are even older! He read them when he worked offshore in the late 70s! They are so yellow & the glue has gone crumbly so the pages fall out but I'll never part with them! 7y
Bambolina_81 These all look great. I'm a relative new comer to fantasy and have yet to read any of these. 7y
Lizpixie @Bambolina_81 as you can see from the condition of all except the new Terry Pratchetts, I have reread them on multiple occasions over the last 30 odd years. Magician is just as old as the Donaldson‘s, and the Jordan‘s aren‘t much younger. On average I‘ve reread them all at least five times over the years. 7y

Congrats on your 10k milestone @GrilledCheeseSamurai ! And thanks so much for the #HipHobbInto2018 giveaway!

It's sooooooo hard for me to pick a favorite fantasy book, I love so many of them! But for the sake of your giveaway I'll settle on Raymond Feist and the start of his Riftwar Saga with Magician: Apprentice. I just love the characters Feist creates! I know it's a great book when I miss the characters after reading the book!

GrilledCheeseSamurai Great choice! It's been a loooong time since I've taken this one off the shelf and given it some attention. Might have to rectify that! ❤️ 7y

How did you find this book? What did you like or didn't like? How about the length, or the characters?

I love this series but for me the two after this one take the cake! Don't get me wrong this book is great and sets up a lot, but some Pug moments were really long for me. Anyway, what did you think?

#Riotgrams #day23 #BookYouveOwnedTheLongest I have a few books that I've had since I was a uiteenager, but none more old than these three. Magician I was given by the mother of my then boyfriend after I'd borrowed it more than twice to read (it's signed!) The TommyKnockers I was given by my sister & Lord Fouls Bane by my brother. All three are at least 30 years old. They've survived moves, floods, baking heat & dogs.

In my series of #LizsLibraryLoves we're up to age 15 when I went on a 3yr fantasy/paranormal binge. This is my original copy of Magician, which is also personally signed by the author (thanks to my boy who stood in line for 3hrs!).Pug is a kitchen boy, recently apprenticed to the palace Magician when a rift is torn between two worlds & he is taken to Kelewan as a slave. With the rift closed, he learns how to survive while trying to find a way home.

TrishB Definitely a much loved book there! 8y

#RockInMay #day10 #LongLongWayFromHome This is one of my most loved fantasy novels. Pug is a kitchen boy from Midkemia, until he's apprenticed to the court wizard. Then they come under attack from a people they've never seen before & Pug is kidnapped, taken through a rift between worlds & put to work in Kelewan as a slave. For years, as he grows into a man,he knows that home is unobtainable for the rift permanently closed after the attack. 5⭐️

Lizpixie Confession time: I haven't actually read Lord Of The Rings yet *gasp* my son has been quietly disappointed in me for years which is why he bought me the boxed set for Xmas! And I have the kind of brain that retains things, which is why I'm great at trivia nights.☺️ 8y

#feistyfeb #day24 #bildungsroman I had to look this one up before I found a book that fit. Had no clue what it meant! My rather battered copy of Magician, it's 30yrsold & handsigned in person, fits the description I think. This first book in the Riftwar saga is about Pug, first his apprenticeship to a magician, then his kidnapping to Kelewan & his teenage years as a slave before getting free and becoming the strongest Mage in all the worlds.

JazzFeathers Have been meaning to read Faist for years. Haven't done it yet. Love books which obviously have 'history' ;) 8y

#photoadaynov16 #day19 #onewordtitles I thought I might only find one or two books for this challenge, but I found quite a few. There were more but they wouldn't fit in the shelf so we have, Grimoire,December,Gravity,Magician,Tithe,Scalpel,Fellside,You,Genesis,Broken,Cinder,Divergent,Insurgent,Allegiant & Nemesis. I think You may be the shortest title in my whole library. And a range of genres as well, crime, fantasy, scifi, horror, even a retelling.

Mehso-so

Full of fantasy cliches, but if you're a fan of Tolkein/RR Martin etc, you will find it tolerable (but not world class). The characterisation needed further development.
