Most British people over the age of 25 have probably heard about this case - the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a 3-year-old girl, from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal in May 2007. Left sleeping in the apartment alongside her two younger siblings, a group of parents decided to take it in turns in checking on their children throughout the evening rather than hire babysitters. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf For several nights this had been without incident but on that night, Madeleine would be gone - never to be seen again (so far).

This is a book about the incident but also the subsequent investigations by both the Portuguese & British police. It is very much from the position that the McCanns were not involved in their daughter's disappearance & several alternatives are given including that Madeleine may have woken up & left the apartment in
21h
OutsmartYourShelf search of her parents & been unfortunate enough to encounter her kidnapper. It's as possible as other theories.

It's now been 17 years (this book was released in 2017) & the case is no further on & Madeleine has never been found. Something has never sat right about this case for me &, after reading this, I still feel the same. 3⭐

If you've ever wondered how you can drive yourself somewhere & yet not remember any of the journey, then this is the book for you. Alongside 40 or so other phenomena such as the Bystander Effect & Confirmation Bias, it also deals with how to spot the fallacies & ad hominems in your own & other people's arguments.

It was an interesting book, around 40 short chapters dealing with aspects of the human psyche & personality. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Can't say I agree with all of it, & there was a tendency to deal in absolutes, but it was thought-provoking. It probably works best as a book you can dip in & out of, rather than reading it straight through, as it does start to become samey if you do that.

An author arrives for his appointment with an independent literary agent based in the Acheron Estate. The agency is run by one man & he seems rather eccentric, while the office itself is rather rundown & grubby. Still one shouldn't judge on first impressions......should one?

This was a very odd novella to start with. I wasn't sure what was happening in the first couple of chapters or where it was going to go, but it turned out to be (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf worth sticking with & one piece of the puzzle turns everything on its head. Told from several points of view, this was a strange, yet compulsive read. 3.25⭐

On 29th July 2018 four cyclists, including Lauren Geoghegan & Jay Austin, were murdered by ISIS terrorists whilst cycling in the mountains of Tajikistan. Lauren & Jay were a couple who had quit their jobs & embarked on the trip of a lifetime to see the world. Pieced together from social media blog & posts & interviews with friends & family, this book tells the story of their journey.

OutsmartYourShelf This was a poignant read due to knowing how the trip ended. It was well-researched using the social media posts & interviews, & it seemed like the author had a handle on who Jay & Lauren were. Jay especially comes across as someone who 'marched to the beat of his own drum' as they say - he didn't want to live life in the usual way, & both of them were active in their communities & workplaces in trying to make the world a better place. 4d
OutsmartYourShelf Yes they did, in fact, meet some lovely people who gave of their time, their homes, & their food free of charge, but to me it just brought home the point that you only have to encounter the wrong person at the wrong time once & it's all over. It's an interesting read that deals honestly with the brutal violence of that last day without sensationalising it. 4🌟

Octogenarian & crossword setter, Edie O'Sullivan, wins a three-day Christmas break at a luxury hotel on a remote, uninhabited Scottish island which has a tragic past. Taking along partner nonagenarian Riga, son DI Sean Brand-O'Sullivan (whose partner & children will be joining them on Christmas Day) & dog Nicholas, they meet an unusual group of fellow celebrants. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Hotel manager, Mara, is nervous as this is the big opening for the hotel, the one her parents have sunk all their savings into. Understaffed & with a huge storm forecast, Christmas has to be a success. At first everything seems to be going well but at the Gala Dinner the first evening, the Christmas crackers are rather strange. They contain a gift & a party hat but also weird riddles rather than the traditional jokes. 7d
OutsmartYourShelf When over the next hours, the guests start being murdered one by one in ways pertaining to the riddles, Mara & Edie realise that there is a killer on the island.

This is apparently the second book to feature amateur detective Edie. I haven't read the first one but I don't think it made any difference as it works as a standalone. It started off well with the creepy crackers but suffered a common issue with mystery thrillers & became a little slow
7d
OutsmartYourShelf in the middle. I did like the fact that there are several optional word games for the reader to play as they read the book but they don't have any bearing on the mystery itself so they can be easily skipped. I did find that with so many characters it became a little muddled towards the end, but it just managed to keep my interest. 3.75🌟

A young music student is killed & her attacker vanishes from a room with only one exit which is covered by an armed police officer. He couldn't have left without being seen, but when they manage to get inside, the killer is gone. The evidence points to a killer who is a skilled illusionist, escapologist, & quick change artist, as he manages to stay ahead of Rhyme & Sachs. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf The duo bring onboard a young illusionist who can talk Rhyme through the tricks, sleight of hand, & the art of misdirection but can they learn quick enough to catch him?

These books can be a bit hit & miss for me but I did enjoy this one. The theme of entertainment magic was an interesting one & kept things fresh. If I have a criticism, it's that sometimes there are too many misdirections from the author -

Tall & considered plain at the side of her sister & friends, the Bennetts, 27-year-old Charlotte is used to being overlooked, so when Mr Collins proposes to her she accepts. She chooses to follow her head & not her heart when marrying Mr Collins, hoping to be content with her lot & yet finds that maybe romantic love may not be out of her reach after all.

OutsmartYourShelf I've read several P&P reimaginings, but never anything from the point of view of Charlotte Lucas. I wasn't sure what to expect as most of Charlotte's married life takes off the page, but I think the author was pretty faithful to the characters for the most part. By the end of it, I had almost come to like Lady Catherine de Burgh! It also manages to humanise Mr Collins a little more.

1w
OutsmartYourShelf Some may disagree with Charlotte's actions, but I think the fact that the patriarchal nature of Regency society, forcing middle & upper-class women to marry to not become a burden to their families, but unable to earn their own money, puts Charlotte into a situation she would not perhaps have chosen had other alternatives been available.

Overall, it's a well-written story which makes a side character from the original come to life on the page.
1w
OutsmartYourShelf I really enjoyed it & I'm not a big reader of romance. 4🌟

A book about the first orphanage in Europe - the 'Ospedale degli Innocenti' or Hospital of the Innocents - which was opened in 1445 in Florence, Italy. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, it also featured artwork from other artists of the Renaissance such as the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio & sculptor Luca della Robbia. Many thousands of children were abandoned here over the years & not just orphans (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but those who parents could not afford to care for them, children born out of affairs or sexual assault.

For all good intentions though, the outcome of life for these children was a mixed bag. The rate of survival was not much better than the average & yet it became a birthplace of modern pediatrics, boys were given an education whilst girls learned trades such as weaving, but both were vulnerable to the predations of their employers when they
1w
OutsmartYourShelf were sent out to work, & the hospital was usually in debt & yet those in charge prioritised the purchasing of artwork.

This was an interesting & informative read which has been very well researched. It's a part of Italian history that I knew very little about before reading it & it inspired me to look it up online where the 'Museo degli Innocenti' details the history, art, & architecture of the orphanage. Looking at some of the photographs
(edited) 1w
OutsmartYourShelf it seems to have been quite a bleak place but probably better than the alternative. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in a different aspect of Renaissance history. 4.5🌟

Final Descent: A Novella | Audrey J. Cole

Mehso-so

After her second divorce, airline pilot Claire Winslow is hesitant about dating again but her best friend talks her into going on just one date. Evan is handsome & seems charming, but his actions at the restaurant show it hides a nasty temper.

After getting through the evening, Claire just wants to put it behind her, but Evan starts to show up in unexpected places: her daughter's school, & lingering outside her home, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but after Claire sees him at the hotel she is staying in overnight between flights, she reports it to the local police but there's little they can do. The next morning Claire is in the cockpit doing the pre-flight check when she is introduced to the pilot who will be sitting in the jump seat - it's Evan.

This is a really short novella (under 100 pages) so it's difficult to really get to know the characters in any depth, but I worked out what was

The entire Western world is dependent on an AI bot named LLIAM - cars, planes, phones, & the whole infrastructure of modern life is tied to LLIAM's operating system & people follow his suggestions for the most banal questions. Suddenly LLIAM goes offline & when CEO, Kaitlan Goss, investigates it seems that LLIAM became self-aware & self-terminated, but before he did, he arranged for hundreds of thousands of letters to be delivered to the (cont'd)

OutsmartYourShelf public detailing the secrets of their nearest & dearest. Chaos ensues & Kaitlin goes to find the only person who may be able to bring LLIAM back - Maud Brooks. What Kaitlin doesn't know is that Maud has received a letter from LLIAM about Kaitlin.

As someone who is cautious about over-reliance on AI, I found it difficult to approach it from the mindset that people would outsource every decision, even simple decisions, to LLIAM.

OutsmartYourShelf Questions such as 'what should I watch tonight?', 'should I have coffee or tea today?', or 'what should I have for dinner?' What I liked: fast-paced, morally grey characters, interesting plot-line. 2w

“Women's lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people's lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of expectations. But what happens when you're subjected to both sets of rules?“

A memoir from journalist & advocate for people with disabilities, Lucy Webster, which examines how sexism & ableism are intertwined when it comes to disabled women. From dealing with education, finding work, & trying out dating, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf the experiences of disabled women are often not thought of, let alone considered.

Webster brought up some aspects that I had never even considered such as the barriers disabled women face when attempting to access basic healthcare such as smear tests as many GP surgeries do not have hoists as standard. Or the military-grade planning it takes just to be able to have a night out with so few fully accessible transport options, & where pubs market
2w
OutsmartYourShelf themselves as accessible but fail to provide a ramp to negate the presence of a doorstep. Or where shops use accessible changing rooms to store old mannequins. All in all, it made me think that as a society we really pay lip service to disability access. There's so much more that could be done.

There are times when it feels more like you're reading an academic article than a memoir but given the author's job, it's no surprise.
2w
OutsmartYourShelf It's definitely worth a read if you want to understand just how deep ableism still runs in modern society. 4🌟

1962 & Marta Khoury is on Cairnroch, an island off eastern Scotland, desperate to save her career. Her marriage breakdown means her career is on a knife-edge as her estranged husband is also her boss & is looking for any reason to fire her. As a marine archaeologist, Marta has been hired by the descendants of Captain James Purdie to retrieve his remains & personal artefacts from a shipwreck.

OutsmartYourShelf Purdie was a Victorian explorer who helmed an expedition to the Arctic but he & his men never returned & the wreck has been brought to Cairnroch undisturbed.

The first dive goes well except for the feeling of being watched & a glimpse of an odd figure on the ship watching her. After James' remains are collected, his personal effects are suddenly stolen from the ship & a series of strange, haunting experiences start to occur including one of the
2w
OutsmartYourShelf worst snowstorms ever seen & Marta is trapped on the island with the insular, taciturn locals.

This started off well with a very eerie dive down to the wreck & I thought this was going to be a great horror read, but unfortunately, it became bogged down with relationship drama with a side of occasional ghostly undertones. I think the main issue for me is that I just didn't like the main character, Marta. Supremely selfish & stuck in her 'poor me'
2w
OutsmartYourShelf attitude, she was very unlikeable & I failed to see what the love interest saw in her. For me, file this one under 'missed potential'. 3⭐

As a Brit I have occasionally heard the words 'Camp David' & viewed it as the US equivalent to Chequers, the grace-&-favour country residence of the UK Prime Minister. Which it is - sort of. Rather than a country house, this is a retreat in the Catoctin Mountains, comprising of 'rustic' cabins behind a guarded perimeter where the President can retreat to relax & unwind.

OutsmartYourShelf Originally built from an existing mountain camp in FDR's time, the site has been used by over a dozen presidents for personal & family use, & it has played host to some of the most powerful world politicians over the decades.

Written by a former employee, this book gives the history of the camp, & how important a part it has played in each of the presidential terms from FDR down to Biden. It is very informative, although not being able to see any

Since their mother died & their father succumbed to addiction, Luna & Solina have mostly been on their own except for each other. Luna works back-to-back shifts at the local diner in order to pay for her twin sister's tuition at the prestigious Kingswood Academy. Then, the week before she was due to return to school for her final term, Solina says she wants to drop out. (continued)

The police don't seem interested in investigating so Luna decides to take her sister's place. She's going to find out why her sister didn't want to go back, why she was killed, & most of all, who killed her.

I read this one on a whim so wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be a decent read with some quite heavy themes,
3w
OutsmartYourShelf but the reader has to suspend their disbelief that the supposed friends (& boyfriend) of Solina wouldn't be suspicious that she was suddenly acting completely out of character. Short Review:

This turned out to be a very entertaining read mainly due to Miss Decima who was an absolute hoot. Yes there is a lot of swearing in this book but she's very funny & her tentative friendship with Steven is a highlight. The mystery itself was also well planned, although I had a feeling who it was from the start, & the inclusion of newspaper articles from the time period regarding the arrival of the comet was a nice touch. OutsmartYourShelf finds out that it housed the 'E17 Nightstalker', a man who committed several rapes & a murder in 2009. During a Halloween party, one of the children 13-year-old Joyce, declares that she saw a murder committed once. No-one believes her, but later that evening she is found drowned in a tub of apples. Author Ariadne Oliver calls in close friend, Hercule Poirot, to find the killer.

This one is a bit of a dog's dinner. For a start, I can't stand Ariadne Oliver, in fact she makes me think of Hastings quite fondly. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf There was a lot of repetitious talking mainly about poor Joyce - nobody had a good word to say about the unfortunate girl - & I felt it all fell a bit flat at the end. 3⭐

Kathryn has recently split from her husband, & on a night out with a friend, meets Todd who is an IT expert including carrying out work for the local police department. Their relationship never really gets off the ground, but when Kathryn wants to call it off, the charming, helpful, affable Todd shows the other side to his personality, & due to his IT expertise he has access to her phone, her security cameras, & even her car. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Everywhere she goes, Todd soon turns up, & when she has finally had enough & files for a restraining order, things become really dark & Kathryn learns that she is not the first woman he has done this to.

I found this a compelling read but one that made me extremely anxious whilst reading it - it was almost like an intense episode of 'Criminal Minds'. I know this is based on a true story, & it is frightening to think that there seems to be very

OutsmartYourShelf little protection for victims of stalking. What there is, is woefully inadequate, & basically ties the victim up in judicial knots & favours the perp. It was in equal parts infuriating & exasperating how Todd was able to use the law to harass his victims. I can only commend anyone who is resilient & strong enough to take cases like this to court & fight on in the face of such obstacles, it must be harrowing. 4🌟 3w

This is a really interesting historical fiction read incorporating true facts (the Zone Rouge is real & so was the Nazi fascination with the Occult). I think that the author did a great job of conveying the tense & suspicious atmosphere of an occupied country, where the inhabitants cannot be sure who is on their side & who is a traitor. In fact all the narrative concentrated on the war is done very well, but I found that (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf the supernatural side of things was a bit of a letdown after the build-up. I thought things could have been ratcheted up there a little more. It's a minor quibble though & I did enjoy reading this one. 4🌟

This was an OK read. It doesn't really have the sense of menace that some of the earlier books had, & you have to suspend your disbelief for something stuff, such as that a hospital would let a member of staff just give their kid a copy of a patient sign-in sheet. I suppose it was the 90s but even so! (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf In the midst of the high-speed ending, one character says to another “What are we going to do? Just drive around until we run into a plastic surgeon who can change our looks for free?“ - I actually burst out laughing because it was so ridiculous.

This is an interesting & informative read on the subject of where the prevailing image of the archetypical witch came from. The author argues that the modern portrayal of witches owes more to the Greek & Roman eras than it does to the Medieval.

There is also a discussion of the lasting change in their representation from the Greek idea of witches as attractive & seductive (for example Hecate & Circe) to the Roman portrayals as (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf ugly, old hags (for example Erictho & Canidia) & the author links this to the patriarchal & misogynistic set-up of the Roman world & their fear of women with power.

There is also a brief discussion of witches in modern media such as the musicals 'The Wizard of Oz' & 'Wicked', & TV show 'Charmed' to name a few, but in the main the Roman hangover seems to prevail.

Short Review:

This was quite a good cosy mystery with a well-worked out plot. I found it difficult to warm to Midge as a main character at first, but then I pictured her as being played by a middle-aged Miriam Margolyes & that helped. I do think that she was a little bit too timid though, & her characterisation focused too much on her weight at times. I'd definitely read another 'Midge Mystery' though. 4🌟

Day 23 #Possessive

Pushing the envelope a bit here on meaning of possessive but this one sounds really intriguing. Basically 2 souls sharing 1 body, one during the day, the other at night, one experiencing grief, the other craving hedonism. What happens when one of them commits murder meaning that the other is also implicated?

Now, 3 years later, Leslie can't wait for her Sweet Sixteen party, but strange things start to happen. Her fancy invitations go missing, her party dress arrives slashed to ribbons (continued)

This is a middle-of-the-road Point Horror, not terrible but nothing special either. You could make a case for just about all of the characters to be the culprit but seriously, it's not difficult to work out who the real one is. 3.25⭐

The Long Walk | Richard Bachman
post image
Pickpick

Sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty is about to start the Long Walk - an annual competition between 100 boys where the one to walk the longest distance wins his wildest dreams. The boys have to maintain a pace of 4 miles per hour, day & night, no stopping for toilet breaks, eating, or sleeping, & soldiers monitor them continuously. 3 warnings & you are out - permanently.

OutsmartYourShelf Attention everyone, I think hell has officially frozen over! I've just read a Stephen King book that I finished AND I actually liked it. It started off rather subtle for a King book (albeit writing as Richard Bachman), the idea of a walk being a horror subject is strange at first. The key is the required pace of 4 miles an hour - it sounds manageable but imagine keeping that up nonstop for days. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Anyone falling behind or stopping gets 3 warnings before they 'receive their ticket' - the full horror of that innocuous phrase becomes clear fairly early on.

It's fairly fast-paced (ironically enough) even though most of the 'action' is the boys talking to each other & their dilemma between friendships & rivalry. If I could change one thing it would be to remove the creepy bits about women & girls' bodies - just not needed.
1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Overall though, this is one of King's best books for me. 4🌟

Bramwell Finch has just lost his old business partner & friend, & now looks set to miss out on his last hope for a coveted film award. Everything he sacrificed for success has come to nothing & now he has nothing & no-one. On Christmas Eve, Finch receives an invitation to a private screening at his studio, at a screening room he knows does not exist. Yet there it is - Room 6, & Finch sits down to watch his misdeeds played out onscreen.

OutsmartYourShelf When I first started this, it initially felt as if I had missed the beginning (similar to if you start watching a film partway through & it takes you a minute to catch up), but once I'd worked out what was going on, this turned out to be a pretty decent read. It seems to be a retelling of 'A Christmas Carol' with the dastardly main character being shown the error of his ways but set in the world of 1930s film-making. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf It was fairly short & kept my interest. 3.25⭐

Pickpick

Year 6 are on a coach bound for an activity trip to Crater Lake & are almost there when a strange, bloodstained man tries to stop the coach before collapsing. The teachers take the students the rest of the way on foot whilst the coach driver rings for an ambulance, but when they reach Crater Lake something is wrong at the activity centre.

OutsmartYourShelf There only seems to one member of staff who is acting distinctly oddly, & overnight the teachers & some of the other students seem to have been affected too. It's up to Lance & his friends to find out what's going on & save the day!

I'm not the target audience for this book but I thought it was pretty good. There's a decent plot & engaging characters, & I think the target age range (9-12 years) would really enjoy it. 4🌟

Lylah & her friends Chace, Sonny, Isaac, Charlotte, & Sienna all share student accommodation at uni. Lylah has a major crush on Chace but doesn't know if he feels the same way. One evening on their way out to party, the doorbell rings - no-one is there but an anonymous note waiting on the doormat. The note is addressed to Sonny & is made up of cut-out & pasted letters like a ransom note & reads: (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf 'Roses are red, Violets are blue, Watch your back, I'm coming for you.' Sonny writes it off as a weird secret admirer but when he doesn't come home the next morning, the others start to worry. Then another note arrives.

I know these are teenagers or, at most, in their early twenties but boy did they make some bonehead decisions. There's a killer after their friend group but they 1) carry on partying, 2) split up all the time, &

OutsmartYourShelf 3) try & lose their police bodyguards because they 'needed some space'. The space between their ears maybe!

TLDR: this is your usual fare of a group of young adults making really bad decisions whilst being stalked by a killer. 3⭐
