Omg! I‘m not kidding this is a MUST READ! Mind blowing story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fun summer read! I‘m not big on romance but this give me just enough to keep me gushing😊
I fully enjoyed every page. The writing is elegantly simple and the characters beautifully drawn. Throughout the entire novel is the story of how love for one's family, especially one's children, endures despite unimaginable hardship, estrangement, even betrayal. It is also a story of how your family is not necessarily defined by blood relatives, but by the people who bond together and draw strength from each other
Macy did an amazing job of researching, synthesizing, and presenting the information, not only about George and Willie Muse, but also about life in the circus during this time and the Jim Crow south. The content of the book was very interesting and gave me a new perspective on circus life.
A short and engaging read telling the story of an escaped slave in Martinique and the hound and master that pursue him.
Lesley delivers 12 stories of loss, hope, violence, and family relationships. None of the stories resemble one another, exactly, but they manage to form a book united not only by theme and by setting (Nigeria and the U.S.)This book gave you magical realism and dystopian. Truly a wonderful read. Highly recommend
Watson‘s elegantly crafted novel speaks to the myriad of people who find themselves searching for themselves in the world.
Set in Chicago in the 1930‘s, Native Son by Richard Wright tells the story of Bigger Thomas, a young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a white woman in a brief moment of panic. I must say this book is a masterpiece! A Black man has gone into the “White Man‘s World”, committed an unspeakable crime and gets away with it. This book has many raw and disturbing moments; however, those moments cause you to think and reflect.
Barracoon is an important piece of black history. This book is based on the life of Kossula's (Cudjo Lewis) a slave for 5 1/2 years whom was granted freedom at the end of the Civil War. Kossula speaks of his yearning for home(Africa), and he makes the reader fully feel his lost and sorrow. Barracoon is powerful, breathtakingly beautiful. An absolute must read.
Dr. Brittney Cooper‘s Eloquent Rage is brutally honest and is written with humor and grace. Cooper presents multiple ways race, gender, and class touch in the oppression of Black Women, and how we subsequently navigate in the world. She provides solid research on why we all should own our rage and she does not sugarcoat words or try to make her evidence comfortable for black men and white people who believe themselves to be good. A must read.
Patrick Chamoiseau‘s Slave Old Man is a gripping, profoundly unsettling story of an elderly slave‘s daring escape into the wild from a plantation in Martinique. Very excited about this read.
I have worked in the restaurant industry for years and I was honestly expecting a 4-course meal of character and plot exploration. That didn't happen. Best part about the book was the lush descriptions of food and wine. Umm…I can't say I would recommend this book, but I just might watch an episode or two of the show in hopes that its better than the book.
So, I completed Ruined by D.E. Eliot and wow! This book had me captivated instantly. Now I normal can complete a book in 2 to 3 days, but this book took a little longer only because I had to walk away and come up for air. My mind was blown and every other word out of my mouth was, No way! WTF! OMG! GTFOH! Really?!...a must read
