This story wouldn‘t be one I would use in younger classes however It could be good supplemental material in 5th grade as a chapter read. This story had dark topics and historical context in a different narrative than the general history view point.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne was published in 2006 it followed a boy bruno and his family‘s journey to a new home in “Out-With” which was a mispronunciation of Auschwitz. The story was filled with historical information about a different viewpoint of WW2 from a child‘s innocent point of view. The story used historical context to drive this tory by including information on Shmuel( a boy in striped pajamas). A heartbreaking story.

Ocean Speaks, Biography, published in 2020.
This biography talks about the life of Marie Tharp. It talks about her love of exploring from a young age, how she solved, problems, and pushed limits. She loved to push the limits of what girls and women were expected to be. One of her biggest accomplishments is the mapping of the mid-Atlantic ridge.

In my classroom, I would use this as an introduction to a geography map unit. Students could gain practice in creating maps for themselves. I think it would be meaningful to connecting it to an exploration lesson where students explore ocean life, or make their own models.

Cricket in the Thicket by Carol Murray published in 2017 is a beautiful notable poetry book and verse novel. This is a whimsical book with many poems about all different kind of insects. The author incorporates facts about each bug on each page. The illustrations are beautiful and give accurate with lots of details and representations of insects. Pages also incorporate collages of newspaper clippings and pictures that add a lot of texture.

I really liked this book and would implement it in my classroom as a way to introduce poetry. It can be very interactive especially in young readers and young grades. I would also do this according to the dates that are in the book and coordinate fun activities to do with them. It is a great way to talk to students about the different structures of poems.

changing of the seasons throughout the year and how we change with the seasons as well.
It goes from the beautiful blossoms of spring scenes to summer activities, to fall chills and the serene quiet of winter. With fast rhymes and beautiful imagery, this book brings poetry and the seasons to life.

I would use this book to talk to my students about emotions. While observing in my previous and current classroom placements, I have noticed emotional regulation is one of the biggest challenges I see students struggling with. I would also use this to educate students about overcoming challenges.

Contemporary Fiction- Hummingbird season is relatable children's book that accurately portrays the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic through the eyes of a child. The book is an easy and quick read that includes a somewhat poetic appearance of lines. The main character, Archie, who finds a new love of hummingbirds and relates to the trials and tribulations that hummingbirds endure. This book validates and honors the experiences of children.

This is a Contemporary Fiction book, published in 2016. The main character, Nancy and her best friend Bree are trying to make a fortune and in the process of finding the best product to sell, they realize the challenges that come along and that sometimes the best things in life are free! This is a simple read, with chapters and occasional pictures in the beginning of each chapter to capture the reader.

I would use this fun story as a read before the end of the day to calm students down and keep them engaged. I think it serves an important message of how money and materialistic items are not worth as much as things such as love, friendship, and time!

I thought that the point of view in which this story was told (revealed at the end) makes the story very interesting. Since it is a chapter book this would have to be used with the older grades. I would use this story to talk about POV within texts.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg was published in 1967. This is a story that follows two young children who are siblings who run away from home in an attempt to make their absence noticeable to their parents. The children go to the Metropolitan Art Museum and from there meet many interesting characters and interesting circumstances.
