Mama Africa!: How Miriam Makeba Spread Hope with Her Song by Kathryn Erskine was published in 2017. This is a biography about Miriam Makeba's fight for equality. The people once called her Mama Africa as she used her voice to protest and sing. This story was beautifully written and captivating!

Nicely illustrated biography of Tyrus Wong

Tyrus Wong was a Chinese American artist, who among other endeavors played an important role in illustrating Disney's movie Bambi.

In just a few pages, Julie Leung and Chris Sasaki manage to tell his life story: from leaving China, studying art to working at Disney. I also enjoyed the extra information at the end containing also the author's motivation for writing this book.

“He thought about his style of painting-
one that combined East and West.
his past and his present.

Tyrus saw an opportunity.“

This book would be a great read for grades 1st to 8th. The story of Wong's life is complex and fulfilling and allows readers to see how a craft can be rewarding for intrinsic reasons and not just extrinsic. Along with the messages, the art is also fantastic. The art follows a more traditional style and is very satisfying to observe as you read the story.

This is a great biography about the life of Tyrus Wong. From the hardships of immigrating to America, to his later endeavors, we get to see how Wong worked hard through his life to be an artist for himself. While at Disney studios he worked hard to create the back drops for Bambi and was unfairly credited only as a backup artist. However, he kept creating art for himself and others.

blurb

This book is great for students who are passionate about art, or for a unit on immigration and Angel Island. This book is also great because it provides a window or mirror for students to see bits of Chinese culture.

This book follows the life of Tyrus Wong, a Chinese-American illustrator and animator, telling his story and celebrating his work. Tyrus and his father immigrated to America when he was just a young boy, using fake names and identities. With a passion for art, Tyrus began working at Disney and created the style for the movie Bambi. This book aims to credit Tyrus for his achievements and recognize his influence.

Won the Asian/Pacific American Award (2021) - This book has great illustrations that I think really help portray the message of the book. Most books in this award seem to be for a slightly higher level like 4th and 5th grade.

Meet Tyrus Wong, a paper son & Disney illustrator whose work on Bambi influenced animation in important ways. Hard to read this book & not be a little upsety. The book depicts Wong's positive outlook & a kid could read it & be inspired. But capitalist America has not shared the bounty with equity.

5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
I love when picture books introduce the reader to someone new. Until this book, I had never heard of Tyrus Wong, even if I have seen Bimbi too many times. I also never knew about paper sons and paper families who used fake identities to enter the US when specific cultures were banned. This story was so heartwarming, and at times sad. It follows the life of a man most won‘t know, but will come to know, and start looking for his art
