KNIVES OUT meets A GOOD GIRLS GUIDE TO MURDER in Mary E. Roachs debut YA mystery Better Left Buried, in which two girls try to get to the bottom of a town full of secrets, a family full of mystery and an abandoned amusement park where people keep turning up dead. Lucy Preston just wants to go on vacation. But being the daughter of a famous private detective means that sometimes, your beach vacay goes off the rails a bit. Think: a clandestine meeting at an abandoned amusement parkexcept instead of a meeting, Lucy and her mom find a body. Because of course they do. As Lucys mom is swept into top-secret detective stuff, Lucy sets out to investigate her moms mysterious connection with this town. Lucys snooping sets her on a collision course with Audrey Nelson, the mysterious girl on the motorcycle who was there the night they found the body. Lucy has questions, and Audrey has answers, but theres this tiny problem: Lucys mom is investigating Audreys mom . . . for murder. Everyone has something to hide, and if Lucy and Audrey cant work together to uncover secrets that go back generations, there will likely be another body found at the base of the old roller coaster. And this time it might just be Lucys. Alternating between Lucy and Audreys point of view, and filled with suspense as secrets are spilled, Better Left Buried is sure to leave readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

“Meet me in the park. I have that, and Dad‘s old flannel, still loose at my shoulders and long for my wrists. And I have the knife tucked inside my boot. Just in case.”

I think that this book is very interesting and has the thriller aspect that I find captivating in the stories that I read. However, I do not think that this is a book that I would use in my classroom or in my classroom library as it is more of a young adult read with some mature language and it is more of a challenging read for children in the grades that I will be teaching.

This book is a thriller and very captivating, however this book wouldn‘t be one I use in my personal classroom. This book has young adult themes that would not be appropriate for elementary readers. The language is also challenging and too difficult for the grades I prefer to teach.
