"There is no frigate like a book to take us worlds away"--Emily Dickinson

This memoir by a North Korean defector is fascinating and quite timely with the Seoul olympics starting today. The tyranny of the Kim regime is difficult to fathom, Nazi Germany‘s evil in existence right now. I learned so much about Asian cultures, too. Highly recommend this one.

When Breath Becomes Air | Paul Kalanithi
Pickpick

I just finished this memoir, and I give it a high rating. It is very philosophical as well as scientific, but the author began as an English Literature major so his use of many appropriate quotes and literary allusions appealed to the old English teacher/Librarian in me. He became a neurosurgeon but wrote eloquently about life and facing his death from cancer. A very worthwhile read—it will stay with you long after you close the book.

Odds Against | Dick Francis

We are rereading all the Dick Francis mysteries that I read at least twenty-five years ago. Odds Against is the first one featuring Sid Halley. Francis's heroes really meet some evil and vicious Brits! I love his writing, and even though I care little about horse racing, his books are always a pleasure. You know the good guys are going to win, and you learn something in each one. Give them a try if you missed them.

Career of Evil | Robert Galbraith
Pickpick

I gave it a pick because the writing is compelling with good characters. However, this one was disturbingly grisly for me. I could even feel the author pull back from the horror she created, ending it on a slightly less violent note. Maybe that was just my perception so I'd be interested in other opinions. Galbraith (Rowling) must write another in the series-- surely she would not leave it as she ended this one?

Man Called Ove | Fredrik Backman
Pickpick

I just finished this one and enjoyed it. The grumpy old man had some poignant insights, and since Sonja loved him, he certainly had great worth. We are discussing Ove this month--should be a good conversation. It was amusing and quirky and sweet. Some really interesting characters in some funny and touching situations.

I read this one many years ago and remember loving it. One of its memorable storylines is that Merlin is living backward and comes up with some great lines from the future. Lots of good philosophy to ponder here 😊

Rebecca | Daphne Du Maurier, Dame

I want this special edition with the extras by DuMaurier. What a great book and so glad it was chosen as the classic of the month.

We had a great discussion of this one at our book club. Lots of comments about sibling relationships, forgiveness, evil, etc. A good read but unsatisfying end.

Sounds like a fun read--adding it to my list.
