The House on Abigail Lane | Kealan Patrick Burke
post image
Pickpick

Last night I finished The House On Abigail Lane by Kealan Patrick Burke. Other than hearing from friends that it was good I had no idea what to expect when I started reading this novella.

If you liked Stephen Kings Rose Red then you‘ll love this book. It takes more of a sci-fi/ cosmic route instead of just ghosts which I really enjoyed. I also liked that it was written like a non-fiction account of the history of the house.

Deathbell | Guy N. Smith

I recently finished Deathbell by Guy Smith as a part of my Halloween reading and I really enjoyed it.

It was pulp horror in the best kind of way. A mysterious man and his family move to a small town and bring with them a mysterious bell.

The townsfolk soon discover that the bell has the power to drive people mad. If you like cults, earless monks and murderous bells then you will like this book.

Castle of Blood | C L Werner

The Warhammer horror line from The Black Library is simply fantastic.

Castle of Blood is the first hardcover I‘ve gotten from them, it follows a diverse group who are invited to a feast in a local nobles historic castle.

It soon becomes clear that they all have a troubled history with him and when a daemon of Khorne is unleashed on the castle they‘ll have to work together if they want to get out alive.

This is the first book in the Friday Night Frights series and I absolutely loved it. It‘s follows a group of horror obsessed highschoolers who have to use their encyclopedic horror movie knowledge to battle vampires who threaten to take over their home town.

If you like horror movies and lots of pop culture reference then you‘ll definitely get a kick out of this book. And I can‘t wait to read the rest of the series.

Another great book from Adam Cesare, this is a fun satanic folk horror set in New England. It hits all the right tropes with a fed up city dweller seeking a change in the country only to discover that their new home is full of dark secrets.

Infested | Carol Gore

This was a super fun short read. And the first rewind or die novella that I‘ve read but based on this book I‘m definitely going to read more.

In it the insects in a local swamp start getting bigger and craving human flesh and it‘s up to the park ranger to figure out why.

I just finished this book and I absolutely loved it, I read it all in one sitting as I was unable to put it down. It reminded me a lot of the Beast House books by Richard Laymon in a good way. If you haven‘t read any of his books yet I highly recommend them. I can‘t wait to read his latest book Dead Girl Blues.

Tribesmen | Adam Cesare

Pickpick

Tribesmen is a fun quick read that explores the cannibal film genre in a literary setting. When an Italian film maker goes to a mysterious island to film a cannibal movie on a shoe string budget only to awaken a centuries old curse. If you‘re looking for a fast paced gory read I can‘t recommend this book enough.

This book was a really fun short read that any fan of B style horror movies will love. I don‘t think I can talk about this book too much without spoiling it so if you like fast paced, action packed horror books than this book is for you.

'Nids | Ray Garton

Pickpick

I‘ve been a fan of Ray Garton ever since reading Ravenous for the first time. ‘Nids is a fast paced novel about giant spiders running amok in a small town and the chaos that follows. It‘s a fun and entertaining book that reads like a good B movie.

IamIamIam Giant spiders?! SOLD! Lol, Kingdom of the Spiders was one of my favorite horror movies as a kid, even though it was really just torture!!! 🤣🕷 5y

I‘ve been reading a lot of Philip Pullman lately, growing up he was one of my favorite authors and Lee Scoresby the aeronaut from Texas was one of my favorite characters. The other was Iorek Byrnison and this novella is all about how they met in the artic north. It‘s a great prequel to the series and dives pretty deep into both characters, which I really enjoyed.

I‘m halfway through my January TBR and the Outsider has turned out to be way better then I ever could have imagined. Also, I probably should have reread the Dark Materials series before starting The Book of Dust.

Neverwhere | Neil Gaiman

Neverwhere was the last book I read in 2019 and it reminded me that I need to read more Neil Gaiman in 2020. It also taught me way more than I ever thought I needed to know about the London Underground and has me convinced that if I ever tried to use it I‘d get hopelessly lost.

I really wish I‘d read this book earlier. I‘ve been a fan of the Witcher games for awhile now and am now picking my way through the book series. This is a collection of short stories that rewrites a lot of fairy tales and places to them in a grim dark setting. Suffice to say that I loved this collection and am looking forward to starting the next one.

The Thicket | Joe R. Lansdale

Mehso-so

Not my favorite book by Landsdale. The main character isn‘t very likable and is naive to the point of frustration. The main plot is all about saving his sister but instead the characters constantly camp and have long drawn out conversations for most of the book which really ruins the pace that is set in the beginning of the book. Some chapters are literally nothing but dialogue which does very little to drive the story forward.
