Our Lady of the Inferno
Our Lady of the Inferno | Preston Fassel
2 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
Spring, 1983. Sally Ride is about to go into space. Flashdance is a cultural phenomenon. And in Times Square, two very deadly women are on a collision course with destiny-- and each other. At twenty-one, Ginny Kurva is already legendary on 42nd Street. To the pimp for whom she works, she's the perfect weapon-- a martial artist capable of taking down men twice her size. To the girls in her stable, she's mother, teacher, and protector. To the little sister she cares for, she's a hero. Yet Ginny's bravado and icy confidence hide a mind at the breaking point, her sanity slowly slipping away as both her addictions and the sins of her past catch up with her... At thirty-seven, Nicolette Aster is the most respected woman at the Staten Island Landfill. Quiet and competent, she's admired by the secretaries and trusted by her supervisors. Yet those around her have no idea how Nicolette spends her nights-- when the hateful madness she keeps repressed by day finally emerges, and she turns the dump into a hunting ground to engage in a nightmarish bloodsport...

Pickpick

It‘s June 1983, a very gritty 42nd St. in NYC. We follow Ginny, a smart, top prostitute, in charge of keeping the girls in line for her pimp. We start to see the very fabric of who she is start to rip as she makes the hard decisions while assuaging her conscience with alcohol. And this 75% of the book was pretty good made even better when you add the 25% that is Nicolette, the serial killer who believes she‘s the Minotaur. Ginny and Nicolette 👇🏼

Reggie are on a collision course. I loved this book. Fassel talks in a video about how he always wanted to write the Minotaur killer book but he didn‘t know how until he went to a horror writing workshop in 2014 where everyone was talking about how there are no great stories in horror for women. And that‘s where he got his inspiration to make a story where the hero and and the villain are both women. He succeeds! (edited) 6y

RohitSawant Oh, this sounds terrific! 6y
Centique @Reggie @rohit-sawant just jumping on to your post Reggie to tell you guys I just watched the Netflix series Russian Doll which you both might like. Very quirky, but not dark, (could be darker- would be good!), great grumpy main character, who keeps dying and reliving the same day. Made me LOL a lot which I don‘t usually do. 🤣 6y
Reggie @Centique I‘ll check it out. Just started my weekend. 6y
Reggie @rohit-sawant @squirrelbrain in no way am I doing it justice, but it was pretty good. 6y
Reggie @sprainedbrain Thanks!!! 6y
RohitSawant @Centique Sounds like an awesome show! Will check it out for sure. I'm currently rewatching Hannibal and started with the latest season of Santa Clarita Diet! Also, have you seen Trial & Error on Prime? It's a fake true crime documentary, has an amazing cast and is absolutely hilarious. You'd like it too, @Reggie. 6y
Centique @rohit-sawant sounds good - I‘ll go and look it up! 6y

Ginny here is one of 8 streetwalkers who is also their enforcer, their muscle when guys harass. She also leads bookclub in the morning. They‘re on the 3rd chapter of The Great Gatsby. It sounds crazy but the more I‘m reading this book the more I‘m liking and appreciating it.

CoverToCoverGirl I‘m intrigued but... nervous about the type of violence that is depicted in this story... I‘ll wait for your review. 6y
Reggie @CoverToCoverGirl I think this is more of a character study than plot. However there is violence but it is not gratuitous. There are a couple of scenes near the end. But it coulda been way worse. I went in thinking this was gonna be a slasher flick and it actually made me tear up twice. So who knows. Lol 6y
DivineDiana Love that there is a book club! Does it tell the book selections? 6y
Reggie @DivineDiana the only one we know about is the Great Gatsby. The book only takes place during one week. But she also teaches them math and German. 6y
