“Most of us are mysteries unto ourselves, and part of our lifelong quest is an effort to understand our authentic selves and our purpose.”

A delightful afternoon read! It‘s 1931 and calling themselves the Queens of Crime, 5 mystery writers (including Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers) band together to test their prowess at solving a recent murder of a young nurse named May Daniels. HF 5🌟

Somehow I ended up with copies of this book in 3 different formats but ultimately went with audio. Gabra Zackman‘s narration adds feeling and nuance to this dual timeline story of Augusta, a pharmacist who had her heart broken by her father‘s delivery boy during her youth in 1920s Brooklyn only to rediscover him when she moves into a Florida retirement community many decades later. (1/2)

LeafingThroughLife This was a little too saccharine and filled with coincidence for me, but Loigman‘s characters are lovable, particularly Augusta‘s perceptive Aunt Esther, who brings wisdom and a touch of magic to her healing. Loigman also brings to life both 1920s Brooklyn, Augusta‘s lively retirement community, and a whole cast of vivid characters that populate each, so ultimately it‘s a soft pick for me. (2/2) 1w

I thought this was a romance when I picked it up. The premise was a bit out there, with Barbara inadvertently making a deal with the devil, and overnight going from gray hair, overweight, double chin, and meek to a slim blonde assertive beauty with the power to make bad things happen to others. It got so ridiculous I thought about DNFing. But I persevered, and suddenly there was some romance, and then the last quarter got really good.

I read this 4 mystery/thriller book club & I listened to the audio & thank goodness I did because I found this so boring. I didn‘t know enough about the authors featured. The story wasn‘t very engaging or maybe it was the narrator. I‘m giving this 3 stars which is what I give a book when it‘s written well enough, but just not for me. I hadn‘t read anything by the author and I don‘t think I would again.
