This is such a sad a tragic story that Jeannette shared with the world. She lost her youth and teenage years at the hands of her abusive mother. She was mentally abused by her mother in ways, unimaginable! This was a very well written bio that was sad but somehow, Ms. Jennette somehow found ways to slip her humor that mad it a little easier to read. Totally recommend this. I had mixed feelings about this ending. The story itself is fantastic but I was surprised of how the character acted in the epilogue - it kind of threw me off.

If you love a mystery, I‘d recommend this one.

This was really compelling: the second book about an African boy soldier for me this year. This memoir is about a teen who escapes with two friends from his village, and survives for a long time before being forced into the military, then released into a rehab program and eventually escaping to the U.S. Excellent insights into the impact of loss of home and family in civil war.

The author describes in these memories, both her growing up in Zimbabwe, as well as traditions, believes and the problems/obstacles that she had to overcome to achieve her goal - work for the UN and to create changes in society/world. This is a really good book about Jewish life in Poland and Germany during the time of the Holocaust. The target audience for this book is middle-school children.

While there are no graphic details of their horrendous life, you still understand how difficult it was for Mala to survive on her own after all the Jews in her Polish town had been killed. I could feel her fear, her grief, her loneliness.

“I had to learn to forgive myself for my brokenness and to be honest about what I was going through. As I talk and write candidly [about my struggles] I feel myself filling the cracks with gold. I am letting the seams show—those signs of survival, those scars I can be proud of—and letting them shine.”

This book should be read by everyone. The lone survivor of a massacre in a school. He was continued to be hunted by the Hutus because he was a celebrated runner, but also a Tutsi.
