Simon Sort of Says
Simon Sort of Says | Erin Bow

For fans of Kate DiCamillo and Jack Gantos, a hilarious, wrenching, hopeful novel about finding your friends, healing your heart, and speaking your truth. Simon O'Keeffe's biggest claim to fame should be the time his dad accidentally gave a squirrel a holy sacrament. Or maybe the alpaca disaster that went viral on YouTube. But the story the whole world wants to tell about Simon is the one he'd do anything to forget: the story in which he's the only kid in his class who survived a school shooting. Two years after the infamous event, twelve-year-old Simon and his family move to the National Quiet Zonethe only place in America where the internet is banned. Instead of talking about Simon, the astronomers who flock to the area are busy listening for signs of life in space. And when Simon makes a friend who's determined to give the scientists what they're looking for, he'll finally have the chance to spin a new story for the world to tell. From award-winning author Erin Bow, Simon Sort of Says is a breathtaking testament to the lasting echoes of trauma, the redemptive power of humor, and the courage it takes to move forward without forgetting the past.

Hilarious and heartbreaking. Erin Bow keeps the suspense going — a late reveal of the traumatic thing that‘s happened to 12-year-old Simon, which necessitated a move to a town without internet — and she keeps the laughs rolling too: a church blessing of the animals gone awry, a murderous peacock, a death metal squirrel cult, etc. This middle grade novel has garnered numerous awards & accolades; now I‘m adding mine. It‘s fantastic. #CanadianAuthor

Today it‘s definitely feeling like spring. I can smell the ‘gentler, more organic pace of life‘ being spread on the surrounding fields.

Oh man, I read this book tonight in one sitting and I have a feeling I'll be thinking about it for quite a while! This book is truly a masterpiece! Such a beautiful, and heartfelt story, but also funny as hell! 💕📚

Using the most boring, fictional, town in Nebraska, the Author‘s quirky characters and audacious plots keep the novel moving right along. With compassion and understanding in some cases, and overreaching ambition in others, Simon tries to continue to survive a school shooting. A wonderful tale.

This book is amazing! I expected it to be heavy, given Simon‘s past, but it isn‘t. It is so funny and heartwarming and smart, and, yes, sometimes devastating, but balanced with new friendships, puppies, and small-town-life shenanigans. I think this will be my favorite middle grade book of the year! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
