Finished this book at breakfast before I went to vote…. I love Carroll‘s artistry and the way she weaves a chilling tale. From the synopsis, I was expecting more of a “Rebecca” vibe, but that‘s not really it. Two thumbs up!

I couldn‘t put this graphic novel down! What a disturbing yet intriguing story of domestic mundanity with untold horrors lurking beneath the surface. This leaves the reader with questions and work to do outside of the page, which I understand from other reviews I‘m not alone in wondering what actually happened in the end. It is creepy but I found it worthwhile and a great read! Also, I love sinking my teeth into a graphic novel in the summer!

I'm sure there is a reasonable conclusion hidden in the art, but I've never been one for deep analysis and interpretation. I had a hard time deciphering the symbolism, and was left disappointed in the conclusion. Beautiful, creepy, good concept, but ultimately too vague for my liking.

Bookwomble I had a similar experience with this one. 8mo

Weird vibes for a lunch break read. Was ALL in until the ambiguous ending.

This was a weird book but interesting. A girl marries a man already with a daughter who tells her that his previous wife died of cancer. When they move to the house by the lake, strange things start happening with the ghost of his late wife. Good graphics and use of color throughout is wonderful. Ambiguous ending that left me scratching my head.

Maybe not the ideal lunch break reading? But here we are. 😆

Gorgeous, creepy illustrations in this mysterious graphic novel set in a small lake country Ontario town. A woman married to an older man whose first wife *apprently* died of cancer begins to wonder if something more sinister actually happened. Classic Emily Carroll. 😱😱😱

Also, for anyone wondering if this is queer: YES!

I liked this, but didn't love it. It had a slow but effective build-up leading to a somewhat confused damp squib of an ending. However - taking a bit of time to think it through did pay off and I raised it from a so-so to a low pick. Perhaps it was me that was confused rather than the story.
So, I'm glad I read it, enjoying the art and layouts more than the story itself, but I'm not rushing out to get more of Carroll's work.

Bookwomble Oh, so I should probably say that it's a kind of American Gothic story about a withdrawn woman who marries a widower, the shadow of his first wife hanging over the household in a Rebecca-ish way, as @jlhammar has already noted. Sympathy for any of the characters is probably misplaced, though I did feel sorry for the MC and her step-daughter. 1y
AnnR Cool candle and bookcover coordination. 🍁👍 1y

jlhammar Love the candle! She definitely leaves the reader with questions. It‘s open to some interpretation, I think. I liked that aspect, but I can understand what you are saying about the confusion. (edited) 1y
Bookwomble @AnnR Thank you 😊 The coordination was more by luck than design, but I see it now you've pointed it out! 1y
Bookwomble @jlhammar Thank you 🕯️😊 I do like a book that doesn't explain everything and gives the reader some work to do, but my Initial feeling with this one was of it being somewhat unsatisfactory, though as I mention above, it did improve with reflection. Thank you for putting it on my radar 😁 1y

Whoa - that was chilling, but awesome. Loved the Rebecca vibes and amazing artwork. If you are into gothic, ghostly reads, add this graphic novel to your spooky season TBR! 📚 👻
