June was another good month…

22 books finished:

Also had an awesome time at a reading retreat.❤️

I‘m still almost all about the romance and spice, but my favorites this month were actually not romance.😯

VeganCleopatra Thanks! I didn't go back far enough to see it. It looked like a lot of fun! I don't know if I could handle that much concentrated reading time, I don't even handle readathons well. Haha 2y

Don‘t let the cover fool you… this book is gorgeous.

Several interlocking stories about native Californians that we don‘t normally see or hear about. It‘s beautifully written, with a diverse and complex group of characters dealing with a whole lot: race, history, family heritage and identity, ICE and immigration, MAGA nightmares, violence and misery, police shootings, COVID. It‘s epic in proportion but somehow very intimate and quiet.

Mecca follows a group of native Californians of various races, moving from one of their stories to the next, showing their isolation and marginalization. About halfway through the book, COVID happens, making these problems work. Beautifully written and utterly heartbreaking.

Bookish_B I had a whole list prepared until I saw you live in Carlsbad. “Southern California” covers a very large area 😂 I second The Last Bookstore and the Library. You could make a day of it and have lunch/dinner at Central Market, a favorite spot of mine, and make a stop at The Library Bar. All are within walking distance of each other. 5y

JaneyWaneyB It's been a while since I read it but would recommend Bright Shiny Morning. It is a mix of different people from different backgrounds living in LA. Chapters are short & you want to get back to the character only to want to get back to another, I couldn't put it down

Christine I missed this post - welcome to SD County!! I‘ve lived in SD since 2013 but strangely I don‘t think I‘ve read too many books set here...will pass on titles if I recall them. I did really enjoy this memoir from a local radio (KPBS) journalist:

Christine And also anything by local author Don Winslow, though much of that is set in Mexico and is SO intense and violent (not my typical wheelhouse, but I got into the audiobooks roadtripping with my husband and do find his books gripping and full of interesting characters). 5y

The Haunted Southland: Ghosts of Southern California | Richard L. Senate

A collection of places haunted in S. Calif. always interests me. It's the area I live in, and many in this collection I have visited.
It's a short and brief summary of various places, most are well known.
I loved the illustrated banner around the pages, very well done.
