Complicated parents are one of my fave memoir genres, and Guerrero certainly has plenty of interesting stories about her father - a Mexican American immigrant who might have been experimented on by the CIA or is potentially a schizophrenic addict. This memoir is at its best when Guerrero examines her roots which allows the reader to be swept away by the mysticism and magic of Mexican culture (alongside the often brutal violence). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Early Christmas present from my hubby! An indoor trainer! It turns my road bike into a stationary so I can get in some pedaling during the rainy season! Hello #audiocycle!!

The book I'm listening to now is a memoir, an intimate portrait of a Mexican-American family, they're history, & the affects of a father's mental illness on his daughters. Powerful story, lovely writing. #diversereads

Christine Excellent! And so glad you‘re reading and enjoying this one - I loved it, and it‘s been well-received locally here in San Diego, but I‘ve been hoping for it to make a bigger splash elsewhere. 6y
valeriegeary @Christine I feel like I've read a lot of similar memoirs this year.... Where the parents are a bit messed up (whose aren't? 😆) And this one might be my favorite of the lot. I love the circular memories and how she intertwines her family history with her own coming of age. It's lovely and heartbreaking. 6y

Christine Haha yes, me too re: the messed-up parents memoirs...really that is one of my most-read sub-genres! 😛 But I agree, this one stands out. 6y

This memoir was fantastic. It‘s a journalist‘s quest to better understand her brilliant but troubled father (and her own traumas and identity). Her personal/family history is harrowing, but the writing is lyrical and gorgeous. I‘ll admit to a local bias because she is a talented reporter for my NPR/PBS affiliate here in San Diego, though I didn‘t even make that connection until after I started reading it! Highly recommended.

This is such a good book about life on the border, immigration, living between two cultures and family. Out today.

Mehso-so

This book started out so good. I was fascinated by the journey Jean went on to find out her family‘s past. But I found the last third of the book to drag on and I didn‘t like it as much. This was a very sad memoir.
