June was another good month…

22 books finished:
-13 audiobooks
- 5 print
- 4 ebooks

Also had an awesome time at a reading retreat.❤️

I‘m still almost all about the romance and spice, but my favorites this month were actually not romance.😯

VeganCleopatra Reading retreat? Do tell. (Sorry if you posted about it, I didn't see it.) 2y
sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra I just tagged you in my post about it. 😉 2y
VeganCleopatra Thanks! I didn't go back far enough to see it. It looked like a lot of fun! I don't know if I could handle that much concentrated reading time, I don't even handle readathons well. Haha 2y
sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra ha! I probably read more in a normal weekend at home, but it was fun hanging out with fellow readers and at least talking books a lot. 😂 2y

Don‘t let the cover fool you… this book is gorgeous.

Several interlocking stories about native Californians that we don‘t normally see or hear about. It‘s beautifully written, with a diverse and complex group of characters dealing with a whole lot: race, history, family heritage and identity, ICE and immigration, MAGA nightmares, violence and misery, police shootings, COVID. It‘s epic in proportion but somehow very intimate and quiet.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Prairiegirl_reading That is a SUPER UGLY cover but I am intrigued! 2y
sprainedbrain @Prairiegirl_reading it is so… not attractive. 😫 2y
Sapphire Is it set in Mecca? Like outside of Indio? I used to substitute teach in that community. 2y
sprainedbrain @Sapphire Yep, parts of it are set in and around Mecca. 2y

Mecca follows a group of native Californians of various races, moving from one of their stories to the next, showing their isolation and marginalization. About halfway through the book, COVID happens, making these problems work. Beautifully written and utterly heartbreaking.

Giving this one a try. I hate the cover btw. But I read the word "epic" in the description and was all in.
