#DynamicDs Day 7: I loved seeing how the two friends were able to tell each other about the things they love through their dancing hands. The Afterword provides information about Filipino Sign Language and how it is distinct from American Sign Language. People tend to assume homogeneity among the non-speaking, #differentlyabled communities, and this book shows how this is not the case. My review of this award-winning book: https://wp.me/pDlzr-r64

I wasn't sure whether I liked this book right from the start but there was something about it that kept me reading. It did pick up into a decent thriller apart from the absurdity of Yasmin driving an eighteen wheeler along the ice road in a heavy snow storm. Suspend your disbelief there!

OutsmartYourShelf There's more to it than a simple thriller though. It's also the story of a marriage where the couple have lost each other in their separate roles & need to find their way back to each other both metaphorically & literally.

here is also the issue of Ruby learning to live in the world & the challenges of being deaf. Having a hearing impairment myself, I thought it was well explained, bur Yasmin

OutsmartYourShelf was too focused on what she thought was best for Ruby rather than what was actually the best for her. If I never read the sayings “super-coolio“ or “awesome sauce“ again though it would be too soon. Just didn't ring true as a ten year old saying those. 3.5🌟

First attempt at Manga. The sign language being what drew me to it. I've read many books with sign from different cultures: Martha's Vineyard Sign, Aslan, Black sign, ASL, and now Japanese Sign. I find it absolutely fascinating. Attraction being a major theme in this series it's easy to see how facial expressions aren't just for communicating but also big "tells" in terms of holding back words/signs and still presenting as confident and curious.

I am currently taking a course trying to learn British Sign Language and I would like to learn more about deaf culture and I was wondering if anyone knew of any novels which have this included? I‘d be very grateful! Thank you

Mrs_B @fredthemoose that‘s a great suggestion, thank you! 1y

TieDyeDude I'm not sure about novels. I read a non-fiction book that examined the independent development of a new form of sign language that was really interesting and looked at sign language from a linguistic and social POV. There is also a hearing-impaired contestant on this year's Great British Baking Show, which was cool to see, though her interpreter was not shown too often and she wore a device, so her signing was also minimal. 1y
Megabooks You may already know this! True Biz features American Sign Language, which because of the influence of French teachers at early American deaf schools, is more similar to LSF than British Sign Language. However, I will recommend this memoir by an American Deaf author. I love how he talked about traveling with other Deaf folks who speak other sign languages. (edited) 1y
