Age of Vice: A Novel | Deepti Kapoor

Pickpick

My HS-aged daughter and I discovered Netflix Bollywood dvd‘s in the 00‘s, and I‘ve been intrigued with stories set there ever since. The last few India-based books I‘ve read had female protagonists so this action-packed story was an interesting diversion. There is still though the theme of have and have-nots where the power of those that have is devastating to those who have not - and to those who try to escape what power buys. ↓

marleed My idea going into 2023 was to ‘steal‘ 2-3 days of the previous month and read down a chunkster so there‘s just 200-300 pages to finish in my current month. It‘s working! I‘ve actually completed 4 chunksters, which for me is anything over 500 pages, this year! 2y
tpixie @marleed fun strategy 2y
Cinfhen I LOVE your colorization #ShelfEnvy 🙌🏻😍 2y

marleed @tpixie I can‘t believe it‘s working! 2y
marleed @Cinfhen The amount of time I spend ‘playing‘ with the books on my Billy shelf lined reading room is something I only admit to fellow Littens! 0h, did you notice the tab on a book there? I don‘t separate my TBR from my read books on my shelves, but I did go through my hardback books in Jan and put tabs on the spines of my TBRs! (And again, the hours spent doing that is only disclosed here :) 2y
Cinfhen Hahahaha 😁your secrets are safe with me xx 2y
Reggie Have you ever read Sister of My Heart by Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni? It‘s my favorite book set in India. My 2nd would be A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth WHICH if you haven‘t read totally works with your goal because that book is 1500 pages. Lol. Also this resonates with me because my parents have taken to watching Bollywood movies at the theaters lately which I find lovely. 2y

This is my next #shelfie from my bookshelf makeover. I‘ve got this month‘s TBR on top, unread paperbacks in the middle, and short story collections plus upcoming #AuthorAMonth books on the bottom. Yay for organization!! 🎉

I enjoyed this quirky Japanese thriller with serious Mr. Ripley vibes.

The Woman in the Yellow Cardigan is obsessed with The Woman in the Purple Skirt. Yellow Cardigan goes from observing Purple Skirt to finding deeper and deeper ways to entwine their lives.

While there isn‘t that intensity and fear that you find in the typical American thriller, this fast read still had me turning the pages.

KarenUK Love that cover 😍 3y
Cinfhen Almost downloaded this one off of scribd this morning, instead I chose 3y

Megabooks @KarenUK it is very pretty!! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks re: my shelves!! 😘 Light Perpetual sounds interesting, but I think Purple Skirt is more up my alley. 🤔 3y
Cinfhen It‘s on the #ManBooker21Longlist otherwise I would have probably skipped it 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen ahhh yes!! I‘m not doing that this year. The list didn‘t really leap out at me like last year‘s. 🤷🏻‍♀️ that award hits me that way some years, and I generally don‘t force the issue. We‘ll see what I do with the National Book Award and Tournament of Books. 🤔 3y
BarbaraBB Great review. I‘ve stacked, sounds like my kind of book! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Interesting cover! Already stacked this! 3y

Migrations: A Novel | Charlotte McConaghy

Pickpick

Almost all animal life on the planet has gone extinct, and Franny sets out to follow the final migration of Arctic terns from Greenland to Antarctica. To do this, she joins the crew of a fishing vessel. I loved her rapport with the crew, especially Lea and Captain Ennis.

The other part of the book looks back at Franny‘s life in Ireland in childhood and with her husband Niall. I didn‘t enjoy these flashbacks as much, but still an amazing novel!

Megabooks @BarbaraBB thank you for the review that sent me on a mission to BN to find this! 😘😘 3y
Alfoster Oh, I loved this one too! Her latest, Once There Were Wolves is on NetGalley and really good as well!🥰 3y
Megabooks @Alfoster that‘s what @Cinfhen said! It‘s definitely on my list! 3y

BarbaraBB I am so glad you liked it!! About the pic: suddenly your books are no longer of the same size! 😉😘 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! I redid my shelves and my TBR shelves are no longer strictly by size, but now mostly by color! I‘m enjoying it. 😁📖 3y
Cinfhen Great review 😁and hardcore #ShelfEnvy 😍 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I truly love your appreciation of my #Shelfie addiction!! 🥰🥰😘 3y
Cinfhen I‘m a very visual person and your shelves are absolutely stunning 🤩 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen me too! I think that‘s why my shelves matter to me so much. Do you paint pictures of characters/people in your head while reading? I definitely do, especially on audio! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen and thank you!! 😘😘 3y
Cinfhen Yup! The stronger the writer the better I can imagine the characters as people I “know” or “recognize” 3y
BarbaraBB They look fantastic this way! 3y

Into Thin Air | Jon Krakauer

Pickpick

Krakauer‘s account of the 1996 disaster on Mt. Everest that claimed 12 lives in two days is nonfiction everyone should read. It will get your blood pumping! He was one of only a handful of people to survive that summited the mountain on May 10.

I love this gorgeous #botm cover!

I still regret not seeing Beck Weathers, another survivor, speak at my college two years after he returned from Everest.

AlaMich Yeah, I read this in about a day and a half which, for me, is lightning-speed. I could not put it down. I then lent it to a friend who I thought would enjoy it. His response was, why would I want to read a book where everyone has to keep stepping over dead bodies? 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 5y
Bookwormjillk This is one of my favorite books. Now that you mention it maybe I am due for a re-read. 5y

The Philanderer | Stanley Kauffmann

The Philanderer sounds like a bit of a #creep.

There must be some slightly risqué stuff that our philanderer gets up to in order for an obscene libel case. ? I might read the summing-up to see what is said....

Also I don‘t need much of an excuse for a gratuitous posting of the orange penguins. ?
