Murder Is Binding | Lorna Barrett

Overall, I liked this series opener featuring a book town, mysteries, and a cozy murder. As other reviews have indicated, the author‘s choice to describe an off page character with a non-PC description is jarring and makes me wonder why. However, I felt for the MC who had a contentious relationship with the sheriff and a sister who high maintenance comes to mind. I plan to read more in the series. #192025 #2008 #52BookClub23 #SetInAWorkplace

A lovely book! The author quit his job and became a guard at his favorite museum to help work through the grief of his brother‘s death. His love for the museum shows on every page. He is a great storyteller & speaks with joyfulness about his work, his fellow guards, the visitors and, of course, the art. I savored this book & really wished I lived closer to NY so I could wander the galleries!

I can appreciate the writing in this book, from the #womensprize long list, but the subject matter was all just a bit..well..grubby for me. The MC starts work at an indie cinema that soon gets bought by a multiplex and the behaviour of her workmates matches the filthy carpets, the overflowing toilets, and the recycled popcorn of the cinema. Be prepared for lots of bodily functions, sex and death. A light pick only.

jlhammar Thanks for the heads-up! Good to be prepared. I'll be interested to see how I get on with this. Those things can definitely be turn-offs for me. 2y
Cinfhen I liked this one, audio was EXCELLENT but it‘s definitely NOT for everyone- it‘s very graphic in detailing bodily functions @jlhammar 2y

Cinfhen Cute graphics, Helen and wonderful review!!!!! 2y
sarahbarnes Great review! I just looked for this one at my library this morning because the description intrigued me, but it‘s not out in the US yet I don‘t think. 2y
TrishB Thanks for warning 😁 2y
Cinfhen @sarahbarnes I was able to borrow through #Scribd if you have a subscription 😁and I think Scribd offers free trials too!! 2y
squirrelbrain I borrowed it on #Scribd too @sarahbarnes although I couldn‘t get the audio on there, unlike @Cinfhen 2y
squirrelbrain It‘s quite short @jlhammar but full of the graphic elements. I‘d still give it a go though, but maybe only if you can get it for ‘free‘. 2y
Librarybelle Great review! 2y
sarahbarnes Thank you @Cinfhen and @squirrelbrain! I don‘t have a subscription but maybe I‘ll do the free trial. 😁 2y
Megabooks I can‘t do bodily functions in fiction. Pass. 2y
Ruthiella I dunno. I think Manhunt was about my limit for this year in terms of grubbiness! 😂 2y
batsy Nice review. It's good to know what to be prepared for! 2y
rmaclean4 I will read it if it makes the short list! 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ To pay off student debt, Beaton headed west to the Alberta oil sands for a quick buck. This encapsulated society exposed her to gendered violence and the detrimental effects on local First Nations peoples. The blatant misogyny in these camps was sickening, but felt unavoidable and impossible to report. Weighed down by her debt, she stayed, then created a beautiful art piece about it. A beautiful #chunkster of a graphic memoir!

I wasn‘t expecting to read this straight through but that‘s exactly what I did. What a delight! So many lovely characters & some true villains & in the end they all got what they deserved - so satisfying. I loved the family dynamics, the behind the scenes at the fashion house & the clothes, of course. I was fascinated by the undergarments - what do you think a “backless brassiere” is?

JamieArc I‘m quite in love with this cover 😍 2y
Jess_Read_This Lovely review! I had a similar reading experience in being surprised at reading it all the way through! I wondered at the brassiere too. I really enjoyed the love Annabel‘s family shared for each other, especially during the trying times they had. 2y

quietjenn Great thoughts! Based on the comments by you and @Jess_Read_This, I must make sure I have an unbroken chunk of time before me when I read this (and definitely don‘t start it right before bed)! (edited) 2y

batsy I've just started, and I agree—I want to read it straight through! Lovely review 💜 2y
Ruthiella I started it yesterday and understand the impulse! Like @quietjenn said, I need to tackle it when I have some free time ahead of me. Unfortunately, this won‘t be till Friday. 😭 2y
