TheBookHippie 😂 the meme 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly HECK YEAH TESS 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin I betcha you would have done the same! 13mo
dabbe I can't help but think that a knife penetrating into a body is also a sexual act--in the fact that she “raped“ him right back and against his wishes. And right where he had no feeling--his heart. Wow. 13mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I love that for her. 13mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Oh, man so do I! 💜💜💜 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe Oh wow, you absolutely nailed it. Great analysis. 13mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly 🤩🤩🤩 13mo
currentlyreadinginCO "Best chapter so far is a homicide" - my full review of this ? 13mo
Bklover @currentlyreadinginCO 😂😂😂😂 I agree!! @dabbe - Brilliant- I hadn‘t thought of that! 13mo

Bookwormjillk Poor Tess. She totally should have kept that money. And her dad did she actually marry this one. Ugh, he needs a punch in the face. 13mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk that is what I was thinking, like her dad is such a fabulous human or something 🙄 13mo

Ruthiella Poor Tess. She has no one in her corner (except us). 13mo
dabbe I am 🤮 about Holier-than-thou Angel. #grr And I have a bad feeling that Alec is going to come back into the picture somehow since Angel kept saying “If only he were dead ....“ 13mo
Cuilin I just can‘t with Angel. 😣 Did he think about the woman he was with? What condition did he leave her in? I think he will regret this behavior. I agree @dabbe we‘re not done with Alec. 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe I agree… though I wouldn‘t mind if Alec shows up and immediately dies! 13mo
currentlyreadinginCO Can Tess please make a selfish choice at some point! Her parents are the worst & she should have kept that cash! 13mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly Now there's a death I would love! 13mo
Bklover @currentlyreadinginCO I know what you mean! I wish she‘d just take care of herself for once. 13mo

Bookwormjillk Tess trying to push him to the others was pretty funny. 13mo
dabbe I hope Tess doesn't decide to leave if the churn continues to not work. The story the dairyman told hit way too close to home for her liking, and it would be just like her to quietly leave, thinking she's the reason for the bad butter. #suchsuperstitiouspeopleinwessex 13mo

Bluebird Poor Tess is trying so hard not to fall in love with him. Methinks she doth protest too much! Valiant effort to get him to pursue one of the other dairymaids. It‘s not going to work. 13mo
Bluebird @dabbe 😂 when she left the dairy house thought she was going to keep walking and not return. 13mo
dabbe @Bluebird Me, too! “These boots are made for walking ....“ 🤩🤣😃 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I loved the story about the philanderer in the butter churn! Sad that poor Tess felt it hit so close to home, though. 13mo
currentlyreadinginCO I like these chapters for being a little lighter after all of the early intensity! 13mo
rubyslippersreads Angel has groupies! 🤣 13mo

Bookwormjillk I am so confused as to how my very stodgy old English teacher taught this in high school. There is so much more to this story than my 16 year old self knew. We weren't even allowed to wear shorts in my school and my teacher was getting away with this. Haha go Mr. Baker! 14mo
TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk I‘ve had these same thoughts this morning -parochial school - although the English teacher did leave his wife and marry a former student of his 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. 14mo

Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie I went to a public school in Massachusetts which is probably the same vibe as parochial school elsewhere 🤣 14mo
Ruthiella Actually this would be a good book to teach in light of the #metoo movement. #Tesstoo 14mo
Clare-Dragonfly How horrible! I thought he would be done with her as soon as he‘d gotten what he wanted, but he wants her to come back. Of course he doesn‘t offer in the slightest to marry her. Obviously never his intention. 😡😡😡 And I want to smack her mother! 14mo
TheBookHippie @Clare-Dragonfly I agree about the slap !!!! Ughhhh and as for his intentions 🙄🤬 14mo
currentlyreadinginCO @Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie I remember my teacher having to explain to us in Florida pub school that Tess was assaulted, half of the people didn't understand this part 😵‍💫 14mo
currentlyreadinginCO I am once again struck by how alone Tess is! She really has no support system from anywhere. 14mo
BarkingMadRead @currentlyreadinginCO for sure, he‘s so vague about it and a kid wouldn‘t pick up on those clues! I really don‘t think she even knew she was assaulted, I don‘t think it occurred to her 14mo
TheBookHippie @currentlyreadinginCO 😵‍💫😵‍💫 14mo
currentlyreadinginCO Good point, maybe I should've been more concerned for the kids who did get it @BarkingMadRead 14mo
Cuilin @Ruthiella I thought this too! 14mo
dabbe A Fall from Innocence chapter if ever there was one. And it's heartwrenching to see how cowed she is by him now when she lets him kiss her good-bye on the cheeks. It's as if her soul has completely died. Yet there was still enough spark in Tess to confront her mother; the guilt is not hers alone to bear. #poortessindeed 😞 14mo
KAO @currentlyreadinginCO I thoroughly agree about how sad it is that Tess has no support system, no matter where she turns! 14mo
Clare-Dragonfly @BarkingMadRead Yes, she obviously thinks she‘s taken part in this “sin” even though she had no choice and would have stopped him if she could. And everyone else thinks the same way! It makes me so mad! 14mo
Bluebird @Ruthiella totally agree! There‘s a whole new dimension to discuss given the #metoo movement. I also think students today would pick up on so much more than I did when I read this in school. #naive. It almost feels like a first read for me. And so much darker than I recall. Poor Tess is alone and adrift. No one to turn to, no one to give aid or advice. 14mo
Bklover @Bluebird I agree- I think now would be a wonderful time for students to study this book. I also think they would “get” it far more than years ago. #metoo 14mo
