BookwormjillkI am so confused as to how my very stodgy old English teacher taught this in high school. There is so much more to this story than my 16 year old self knew. We weren't even allowed to wear shorts in my school and my teacher was getting away with this. Haha go Mr. Baker!13mo
TheBookHippie@Bookwormjillk I‘ve had these same thoughts this morning -parochial school - although the English teacher did leave his wife and marry a former student of his 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫.13mo

Bookwormjillk@TheBookHippie I went to a public school in Massachusetts which is probably the same vibe as parochial school elsewhere 🤣13mo
RuthiellaActually this would be a good book to teach in light of the #metoo movement. #Tesstoo13mo
Clare-DragonflyHow horrible! I thought he would be done with her as soon as he‘d gotten what he wanted, but he wants her to come back. Of course he doesn‘t offer in the slightest to marry her. Obviously never his intention. 😡😡😡 And I want to smack her mother!13mo
currentlyreadinginCO@Bookwormjillk@TheBookHippie I remember my teacher having to explain to us in Florida pub school that Tess was assaulted, half of the people didn't understand this part 😵💫13mo
currentlyreadinginCOI am once again struck by how alone Tess is! She really has no support system from anywhere.13mo
BarkingMadRead@currentlyreadinginCO for sure, he‘s so vague about it and a kid wouldn‘t pick up on those clues! I really don‘t think she even knew she was assaulted, I don‘t think it occurred to her13mo
dabbeA Fall from Innocence chapter if ever there was one. And it's heartwrenching to see how cowed she is by him now when she lets him kiss her good-bye on the cheeks. It's as if her soul has completely died. Yet there was still enough spark in Tess to confront her mother; the guilt is not hers alone to bear. #poortessindeed 😞13mo
KAO@currentlyreadinginCO I thoroughly agree about how sad it is that Tess has no support system, no matter where she turns!13mo
Clare-Dragonfly@BarkingMadRead Yes, she obviously thinks she‘s taken part in this “sin” even though she had no choice and would have stopped him if she could. And everyone else thinks the same way! It makes me so mad!13mo
Bluebird@Ruthiella totally agree! There‘s a whole new dimension to discuss given the #metoo movement. I also think students today would pick up on so much more than I did when I read this in school. #naive. It almost feels like a first read for me. And so much darker than I recall. Poor Tess is alone and adrift. No one to turn to, no one to give aid or advice.13mo
Bklover@Bluebird I agree- I think now would be a wonderful time for students to study this book. I also think they would “get” it far more than years ago. #metoo13mo
