Angels Flight | Michael Connelly
post image

#anewchapter #mytown

I've never read Connelly nor watched the show Bosch but I have ridden Angels Flight in Los Angeles. This iconic landmark reopened last year after being closed. It is a funicular railway that runs only a couple hundred feet and 1 minute in time. It was also featured in the movie La La Land.

imabusybee 500 Days of Summer also features Angel's Flight along with lots of other near by spots. I love L.A. 6y
mrp27 @imabusybee That's right, I forgot about that! One of my favorite movies. Makes me also think of the Bradbury Building. I'm learning to love LA again. 6y

#ANewChapter #MyTown This book has been on my TBR shelf for far too long. Technically this is where I'm from. I now live on the other side of the state. @vkois88 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Samplergal I loved this book. Many years ago. 6y

#ANewChapter Fiction writers not only bring us characters but settings that have a life of their own & bring a story to life.Winesburg isn‘t talked about much these days but it and Spoon River Anthology still are ,in my opinion, significant to American Modernism.Russo‘s books often feature small towns in decline, some with charm & some that make you think, I‘m glad that‘s not #MyTown

merelybookish Nice pairing. I haven't read either author. 6y
Leftcoastzen @merelybookish A lot of people skip Anderson after finding out Hemingway wrote that parody ,Torrents of Spring mocking Dark Laughter, but I remember Winesburg with fondness.I have not read all of Russo‘s books but have enjoyed the ones I have,I feel I really KNOW those people in his books like I‘m living with them for good or ill . 6y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I agree with @Leftcoastzen , Russo is a great writer, I‘m almost sure you‘d love him too! My favorite book of his is (edited) 6y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen I trust you both! I do like character-driven books so time to add some Russo to the TBR! 6y
ValerieAndBooks I‘m actually starting Winesburg today! Son is currently reading it for HS class. When he was describing it, I said his description reminded me of Spoon River Anthology. 6y

A skyline view of #mytown. Not my hometown, but it definitely feels like home.

Sooo #MyTown is the beautiful Tampa, Fl... I chose this book for obvious reasons however Im not necessarily recommending it to anyone lol
Difficult subject matter and a really disturbing read. The book is based on Debra Lafave- who the author went to high school with. Interestingly enough, I also taught at that same middle school about 10 years after the “incident” occurred... not the best publicity for the school lol

Samplergal It‘s such a good book though. 6y

Today in Raleigh, NC (named after Sir Walter) we had a cloudless blue sky and the high temperature was around 50 degrees. Raleigh is known for NC State University, which is where I went to college. The JC Raulston Arboretum, located near NCSU, is one of my favorite spots in town. #mytown #anewchapter

Pickpick

I have a hard time reading books that are set in #mytown. Detroit is easily misunderstood and has been a punching bag in a lot of pop culture portrayals, so I can get my hackles up pretty quick. I didn't love everything about the Detroit of Zoboi's imagination, but I did love Fabiola, the main character, so, so much. Bonus that the intersection of Joy Road and American Street is a real one, and only a few miles from where I stay. #ANewChapter

No time for reading today! Cardiologist appointment and then I tried to do some yard work before the cold weather gets here tonight!! I‘m not complaining because I know some of you guys are having it rough!! MS weather is crazy! It‘s 63 now, but will be 24 when I get up in the morning!

This book is set in the town where I work. A devastating tornado came through Tupelo in 1936 killing 216 people. I remember my 👇🏻
