#TuesdayTunes

The soundtrack of the tagged play was released in 1970 and my dad bought the album. I was 11. Somewhere in the mid 60‘s my mother became a Seventh Day Adventist and our household drastically changed. Listening to this album constantly was an act of rebellion. She HATED it. This clip popped up on IG yesterday so I thought why not share here. I still know all the words.

@TieDyeDude

Suet624 I‘m with you. I know pretty much every word of this play. 2w
Ruthiella I am an atheist and I love this musical. Particularly the film version with Carl Anderson as Judas. What a performance ! 👏👏👏 2w
quietjenn Such a favorite! 2w
TieDyeDude My mom had the soundtrack on vinyl and CD. We didn't have to rebel to listen to it, but it's awesome that you did 😁 1w

Falsettos | James Lapine, William Finn
post image

This is not book-related (although his musical Falsettos won Best Book at the 1992 Tonys!) but I had to take a moment to mourn William Finn, one of the greatest musical theatre composers to ever do it. If you're a theatre kid, join me in listening to Falsettos, A New Brain, Spelling Bee, and Elegies on repeat today. If you're not a theatre kid, can I interest you in discovering some damn good music and poignant stories? #SeeMoreTheatre

Hedwig and the Angry Inch | Stephen Trask, John Cameron Mitchell
post image

Wicked is in theaters this weekend: a book that became a Broadway show that is now a movie. Are you excited?!
For #tuesdaytunes today, I'm sharing my favorite stage show adapted into a movie. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about an East German singer who tells the story of her betrayal by a collaborator who used their work to gain fame for himself. Created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask.

willaful I love Hedwig! Was lucky enough to John Cameron Mitchell in 2020 (right before lockdown.) 5mo
TieDyeDude @willaful I saw Mitchell in 2015 after he injured his knee (which he brilliantly worked into the story as getting Nancy-Kerrigan-ed by a Gnosis fan). I got to see Neil Patrick Harris in preview, as well! 5mo
InkedBookworm13 I love Hedwig. ❤️ It is stuck a good movie, I've never seen the show though. It's on my to do list. 5mo

I saw this show live for the first time *just* after my 35th. Sondheim always nails the nuance. His musicals somehow always feel real and the characters feel like friends. 🥺🫶🏻🎶

Ruthiella I haven‘t seen or listened to all of Sondheim‘s musicals yet by any means, but so far, Company is my favorite. 10mo
Melismatic @Ruthiella it‘s pretty great!! Into the Woods will always be my favorite, but Company is a close second. 10mo
TieDyeDude I have a DVD of the Neil Patrick Harris-led cast. Great show! 10mo

Like so much of Sondheim‘s work - it only grows truer & more ubiquitous with time. It‘s shocking, really.

The fact that this show debuted after his arguably most commercially accessible musical (my fave - Into the Woods) shows the range this man offered us.
