#Readingoceania2024 #Marshallislands Although this book falls squarely in the travel genre known as “my one year in______”, unlike most books from Peace Corp volunteers, this author has a lovely sense of humor, is capable of some self insights and knows how to write. We spend a year with him in a very small outer atoll island village and learn with him much about their language, culture and way of life. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative

Librarybelle This sounds great! Stacking! 7mo

Read this book. 🤍✨ her voice, her life, her story deserves to be heard, cherished, and remembered.

Beautiful poetry and story, woven and arranged and told in a way that will stick with me for a long time. An unfolding of a life. I loved the way the poems were artistically put onto the page too. So much I could say. But her words are what matters here. Read this book. 🤍✨ #poetry

This is already a grim read about the South Pacific islands. There‘s a detailed description of the #MarshallIslands, including how dreadfully its residents are treated thanks to the ultra-secret US base there. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

An LA cop accepts the position of chief of police over all the Micronesian islands in the late 1970s to 1980s, and dang was it ever an adventurous true story. Sometimes it was downright scary and at least twice it was hysterically funny thanks to very real cultural differences from island to island. I don‘t think any book could better describe the islands‘ cultures, and adapting to them than this book. Very readable nonfiction. The author is ⬇️

Texreader impressive for his creative solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems. His success paid off and he continues to enjoy success in his subsequent careers. #readingOceania #Palau #MarshallIslands Just 3 countries to go to finish this challenge!! (edited) 10mo
Hooked_on_books I read this recently and really enjoyed it. I really appreciate how he was so respectful of the local cultures. 10mo

In 1978, LA cop Bryan Vila went to #Micronesia as it was transitioning to independence to train the local police forces. This could have been a testosterone-fueled meathead of a book, but Vila clearly approached each of the 12 cultures with respect. There are also some quite funny moments. Highly recommend. Also works for #Palau and #MarshallIslands

Librarybelle Love the quote! 10mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Me too! And it really exemplifies the book and his attitudes. He was such a good choice for this role, to get the policing of these new countries off on the right foot. Really respectful guy. 10mo

An interesting account of the impact of the US nuclear tests on the people of the #marshallislands.

In 1954 the US detonated a bomb that was a thousand times more powerful than Hiroshima- and the resulting fall-out decimated the islands and the lives of the inhabitants.

The audio narrator was a little bit robotic (maybe due to me listening at 1.8x) so I switched to digital print for the final 20% - much better.

BarbaraBB Sounds good indeed, a subject I know little about. 10mo
Lindy I recently DNFed an audiobook because the narrator sounded like AI. I investigated Karie Richards and she is a real person… and I just don‘t like her voice at any speed. (I did experiment with playback speed.) 10mo
Librarybelle Something not really talked about in the history books in the US…I didn‘t know about this until I took college history courses. 10mo
Suet624 Ugh. How sad. 10mo
Hooked_on_books I realize how much privilege being an American has provided me, but too often I am embarrassed by the choices my country has made. So many bad choices during the nuclear testing era. 10mo

So this collection of poems represents the Marshall Islands. So beautifully written and she really touched my heart with her words describing her life as a Marshallese daughter. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Librarybelle Gotta love powerful and beautiful reads! 11mo
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle yes. So very much. She touched on the hate she encountered...the climate change that has touched the islands and the cancer from our nuclear testing. Very powerful. 11mo

Linguistic anthropologist Berman explores the culture of a village on a small #MarshallIslands atoll, revealing the socialization of adults and children based on behavior and language. I was worried this would be dry, but it‘s completely fascinating. She uses a simple story of an interaction between multiple people to illustrate each of her points and is deeply respectful of the people and their culture.

Country Jumper in Marshall Islands | Claudia Dobson-Largie

This book is from the “Country Jumper” series and is chock full of interesting facts. It‘s written for kids, but not too elementary. I think it‘s probably best used as an introduction to junior high level and older students and older folks like me who want to know about a country because the author does not stupid down anything, which I wholeheartedly appreciate. I‘m ready to jump to other countries! Highly recommended for a short read for ⬇️

Texreader the #MarshallIslands #readingOceania. Also includes a wonderful comprehensive list of the author‘s references. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle
