Hedwig and the Angry Inch | Stephen Trask, John Cameron Mitchell
post image

Wicked is in theaters this weekend: a book that became a Broadway show that is now a movie. Are you excited?!
For #tuesdaytunes today, I'm sharing my favorite stage show adapted into a movie. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about an East German singer who tells the story of her betrayal by a collaborator who used their work to gain fame for himself. Created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask.

willaful I love Hedwig! Was lucky enough to John Cameron Mitchell in 2020 (right before lockdown.) 3w
TieDyeDude @willaful I saw Mitchell in 2015 after he injured his knee (which he brilliantly worked into the story as getting Nancy-Kerrigan-ed by a Gnosis fan). I got to see Neil Patrick Harris in preview, as well! 3w
InkedBookworm13 I love Hedwig. ❤️ It is stuck a good movie, I've never seen the show though. It's on my to do list. 3w

I saw this show live for the first time *just* after my 35th. Sondheim always nails the nuance. His musicals somehow always feel real and the characters feel like friends. 🥺🫶🏻🎶

Ruthiella I haven‘t seen or listened to all of Sondheim‘s musicals yet by any means, but so far, Company is my favorite. 6mo
Melismatic @Ruthiella it‘s pretty great!! Into the Woods will always be my favorite, but Company is a close second. 6mo
TieDyeDude I have a DVD of the Neil Patrick Harris-led cast. Great show! 6mo

Like so much of Sondheim‘s work - it only grows truer & more ubiquitous with time. It‘s shocking, really.

The fact that this show debuted after his arguably most commercially accessible musical (my fave - Into the Woods) shows the range this man offered us.

Maybe this libretto is a weird choice to crack into this weekend but its subject matter feels more relatable than ever in this divided nation mindset. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Now I need to look up clips from the original off-Bway cast bc Terry Mann? Victor Garber? Annie Golden? Phew.
