In 4th grade, I convinced my teacher to let us do a #LetterToTheAuthor project. We'd read the first HP novel in 3rd grade, so we decided to write to JK Rowling. We each wrote a letter and then put all of them into a manila envelope. Cut to the end of the school year; I alone got a response. My classmates were pissed. #BooksAcrossOceans

We visited Fort Clatsop in Astoria, Oregon last week and I came across this racist sign.

No, I don't suppose York was treated as a peer. I do think these are the kinds of things we white people tell ourselves to feel better about our American heroes owning slaves in this country that was founded as a racist society.

This is not acceptable.

When I got home I wrote 3 letters to the National Parks Service.

In the late 1990s l started writing to David Gemmell, my very favourite author. I'd write him every few months, telling him little things that happened to me in my broken English. Sometimes l would send him little presents. I liked doing it. I never expected anything in return.
But he was so kind to actually reply to me twice in the few years l wrote to him.
I remember that 'correspondence' with fondness.

As soon as I finished it, I felt compelled to pick up a pen & tell her exactly how wonderful I thought her novel was. I'm really hoping she writes another, I'm especially hoping it's just as good and she doesn't end up being another writer who either failed to live up to expectation or only had the one story in her.

Dear Ms. Rowling,
Why? Why didn't you let Harry, Hermione, Ron, and all their friends end their stories on a high note? Why allow them to be aged and written in such a way that doesn't ring true to the essence of who the characters were? I ask again, why? Just why?!
