The Forgotten Waltz | Anne Enright

This was a depressing - though well written - slice of life story. It's about a married woman who starts an affair and how things develop from there. Set in Ireland with the 2007/8 financial crisis as a background.

A beautifully told story abt a young Catholic man living with his father in a loyalist community at the height of the troubles. Haunted by his part in the killing of a local police man he tries to get out of more ira activity. When he meets the widow of the victim, a love affair seems inevitable but doomed. A brilliant book that I couldn't put down + was immersed in brilliant writing. I saw the film in the 80s so will be interested to watch again

Texreader Looks like a good book for #Ireland #foodandlit this month @Catsandbooks 2w

Suet624 I'm so glad you received it. And I absolutely adore the drawings by the artist - he does a lot of animal drawings, but I'm most fond of his nature scenes. 3w
AmyG @Suet624 Reminds me of VT. ❤️ 3w

This is a slow, contemplative novel about a young artist battling with her mental health. I was surprised by all the love in this sad novel. I am glad I read it. 3 🌟

Not that it will happen, but every soon-to-be father should be required to read sections of this book. A woman explains what her life has become once she has become a mother. Her husband is busy at work and he abdicates all responsibility for the child. The exhaustion, anger, disappointment, loneliness, desperate love and raging anger toward a young child, all of it was perfectly described.

Tamra I was lucky, my husband was really great co-parenting both of our children as infants & tots. (Not that he isn‘t now, but that‘s the focus of the novel.) I have serious admiration and at times sympathy for single parents & guardians without a source of support. 1mo
Suet624 @Tamra my situation is so varied. Three marriages, children every 7 years with the last two being twins. I was a single mom occasionally. My last husband was very helpful. The others, not so much. Living in a commune with my first child was VERY helpful. 1mo
TheBookHippie I agree. A must read. 1mo

Tamra @Suet624 I can see any arrangement with multiple responsible adults in a household with small children would be a great fortune! 1mo
Suet624 @Tamra it really was the best. 1mo
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. That husband though. I can‘t imagine living with and tolerate such a man 1mo
Anna40 I think most men, even if they read it, would still not understand. But great review! 1mo
Suet624 @Tamra I was thinking about your comment again and it made me wonder why some men are great at understanding the needs of a new mother and others aren‘t. Probably a million reasons but I‘m glad yours was on top of things. 😊 1mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I know! And I fear it or some variation of it happens more than we like to think. 1mo
Suet624 @Anna40 oh my. You might be right. 1mo
Tamra @Suet624 we were way older than average and ready so that was part of it and my husband isn‘t thoughtless. 😂 1mo
Suet624 @Tamra that‘s a great point about age. That‘s definitely a huge factor. (edited) 1mo

These short books really pack a punch. There are three, Earth, Water and Fire and this is the second one I‘ve read. Famous footballer, Evan, and his teammate, Robbie, are accused of rape. Did they do it? And what has led him to this courtroom, awaiting the verdict? It‘s a gripper and I‘m very much looking forward to the third book.

AmyG It will not disappoint. 2mo

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story collection. I wouldn‘t want to read it in warmer weather though. I read her book Small Things Like These on the beach and it did not fit the mood at all but the story has stayed with me and I appreciate it more now than when I read it. Moody winter was the perfect location for this collection. I‘d read each story again.

Cathythoughts I loved this book too ❤️ 2mo

5/5 🌟

Beautiful. Funny. Raw. Honest. Primal. Angry. Moving. This book evoked a whirlwind of emotions. It's a powerful and candid account of a first-time mum's journey, exploring her immense love for her child alongside the struggles of motherhood and the loss of self that often accompanies it.

It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of being a parent, and for that, it feels deeply relatable. An amazing book!
