I finished this the other day but apparently forgot to review!! Jabbour explores wats to extend the gardening season via cold frames, row covers, unheated greenhouses, etc. She has a lot of practical information about building and using these items, and about what kinds of veggies will grow in these conditions. The second half of the book is a vegetable reference with tons of different veggies listed by cold/cool/warm needs, and the basics of⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) raising them. This isn't really a book for beginning gardeners, although the reference section does have a lot of great information. But if you've been gardening for a year or two and are wishing you could harvest things like kale, salad greens, carrots, etc. all year long, this book is full of color photos, clear instructions, and lots of tips. Mostly this book made me wish that I had a good place to set up grow lights so I can start ⬇ 3y

I thought the beginning was slow to get moving. The girls are seniors and all 4 best friends. One of them, we are told, will become the president of the US. But which one? I thought the struggles with family, adoption issues, and socioeconomic status were very well done. Also, the marginalization of people with physical disabilities, and handling of mental health issues.

rjsthumbelina However, I really wish the author would have gone harder for the racial issues that just peak out at the surface of the story sometimes. It was a 3 and a half stars for me, but would have been a high 4 if that had been included more in the story. I really liked the romances here as well. It was pretty cool too that the girls' hobbies didn't end up defining their future career paths 5y

rjsthumbelina @LiteraryinLititz I enjoyed it, too, for the most part. I just thought that the beginning took too long to really start moving, and that the author really missed an opportunity to talk about racial issues once she had brought it up. It felt almost like those characters were marginalized from the story bc she didn't tackle that after briefly mentioning it 5y

Kitchen Confidential, Insider's Edition: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly | Anthony Bourdain

so-so

I had no idea that this book was going to be so brash, and not in a good way. I thought the beginning was very boring, but as it got into Bourdain's addictions I started to get more interested. Rather than being about what it's like to be a chef or work in the industry, it's very specific to his experiences. Also, in later chapters he mentions other cooks dying by suicide rather crassly, which was very strange, especially on audiobook

Absolutely my FAV book right now. It‘s a lovely fast but easy read and is divided up into chapters that highlight plants according to their features, such as those that have spines and are know for their physical dangers or those that were traditionally used in food and potions.

Went to #Jamestown Settlement today for the 3rd Annual Intertribal Powwow. Came home with a shirt, a couple books, a pair of wampum earrings, and a buckskin purse.
