I want to thank #foodandlit2024 for encouraging me to choose a book from Finland. One of my best friends growing up had a Finnish dad and a Swedish mum and I was exposed to all of the best things from each culture and continue to love Scandi style above all others. This novel is a love letter to summer and Finland told in short vignettes that flip back and forth through the main character‘s , Sophia, childhood summers with her grandma and father.

mcctrish I spent most of my summers on the shores of Lake Winnipeg with my maternal grandparents and my mom ( my dad was there part of the summer) and while not nearly as isolated as island living, the floating timelessness of my days are so much like the ones in this story. There is no way kids now could ever experience this natural summer childhood and that‘s such a loss (edited) 1mo

Susanita Your summers sound wonderful. 1mo
mcctrish @Susanita absolutely they were, so many memories were stirred up with this book; my chores, the routines/traditions and all the time when I was just off on my own or with friends walking, bike riding and at the beach 😱with no supervision 1mo

#foodandlit for December is Finland not sweden 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I‘ve started this to close out the year with because I knew that when I went looking for books to read! my husband‘s family is from Sweden and we go to a Swedish fair in Toronto every year to stock up in Swedish treats for Christmas- these Polly candies were new to us. They taste like a cross between a rum ball and a milk dud. I will do better with food choices going forward

TEArificbooks I thought it was Finland for December 1mo
mcctrish @TEArificbooks it is and this book is set in the Gulf of Finland 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Tamra Such a lovely story no matter! 1mo

#two4Tuesday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) a cup of black tea with honey in the morning and after dinner, cuddles with my cat

2) persistence in the face of death and just about everything else!

This is an oddly entertaining and satisfying murder mystery—the victim performing his own investigation to find his murderer while trying to save his organic mushroom business against a fierce competitor in this quiet Finnish hamlet. Jaakko has been poisoned over a long period of time such that he became used to it while it damaged all of his internal organs. He‘s on borrowed time. And does he ever make use of it. There are only two suspects ⬇️

Texreader but the ending is still a big surprise. And he has only one real goal other than seeing his murderer come to justice—saving his little business, a full time job given the snazzy new mushroom business down the road with its spanking new equipment and outbidding all his employees to come work there. While not rollicking funny it‘s truly entertaining. I found myself rooting for Jaakko even when he wasn‘t making the best decisions. Will he survive? ⬇️ 2mo
Texreader Sadly no. He really is the victim of a murder (the title of the book is a dead giveaway). But before he goes, he‘s going to take care of business. I‘d really like to read more by this author if his books have been translated and made available in the US. #Finland #foodandlit @Catsandbooks #letterM #Christmasatoz #xmaschacha #wintergames @StayCurious (edited) 2mo

Tonight I tried making “PANNU KAKKU (FINNISH OVEN PANCAKE)” for #Finland for #foodandlit. It was ummm, good, but very sweet. Maybe not the best breakfast-for-dinner plan. So we ordered pizza. We will try the remaining Finnish sweets I ordered another day while we all recover from the sugar high here. @Catsandbooks

TheBookHippie Looks yum. 2mo
Catsandbooks I love Panna kakku! When I lived in the UP there were multiple finnish diners that served this. It's typically a small slice accompanied by other breakfast sides. 😋 1mo
Catsandbooks Also you can try dipping the trenary toast in hot chocolate. That's what my grandpa taught me and he was part Finnish 1mo
